fiendishly clever

This is a fiendish clever mystery, written with wit and venom. How is it that modern writers of so called cozy mysteries emulate the form without always matching the intelligence?

The book begins with a birdseye view of a charming landscape, filled primarily with British aristocrats and the community that revolves around them. At first glance all is peaceful and pretty, but with the death of an elderly Lord damning secrets begin to seep to the surface. When a murder is discovered Chief Inspector Allen is called in. Is the murder a result of of submerged political scandal or a quarrel over local fishing rights? Are there other factors at work? The murdered man is pleasant fellow of stellar character. Who could have ended his life in what turns out to be a particularly awful manner?

As with another recently read Ngiao Marsh mystery written in roughly the same stage of her career, I am struck by the singular mix of charm and intensity that seems to have arisen as Marsh developed as a writer. Her earlier books were always entertaining and well observed but around this juncture of her career she seems to have become ferocious. There are at least two mysteries from around this period that share this quality and this may be one of her best. I hope that the later Marsh books continue to be released in ebook form do that I can enjoy them. This one was a bit of a revelation.

Another great one.

As usual, I enjoyed this Marsh novel. It has all of what I love: the Brits in the 1930's-40's era, their way of life, and, of course, a murder being solved.
This is beside the point, but I had a chance to visit Ms March's home which is now a museum dedicated to her. It was thrilling!

I first read this book about two decades ago, and have never, ever forgotten the grisly method of murder used in it. It's not presented horrifically, so there's no real need to worry about nightmares, but it is absolutely unique among mysteries.

If you collect jewelery fine or costume this book is a must. Those little marks that you need your 10X loupe for are deciphered! This is not an exhaustive list because there are new treasures found every day but it will really help the collector figure out just who made that lovely item! Get this one now.........

Good book but missing info!!!!!!!

This is a great ref book for Jewelry Companies that are long gone, their marks and company background. However it is missing some well known companies from the 50's and 60's but to it's credit there are also marks that ARE included that belong to little known companies. The layout could be improved as sometimes companies marked with a logo, and not the name, finding the logo means you have to search the whole book if you don't know who it was made by. That being said the book is a must have for all jewelry collectors as the info contained within is NOT the opinion of the author, it is taken from actual historical books, and vintage Trade guides etc.

Like this title suggests, this was a textbook for one of my courses. It did its job, and was informal. However I kinda wish I rented it rather than trusting my professor when she said that this text would be used later in my career. I guess time will tell, whether I will be using this text as a reference.

This book offers a presentation of the special theory of relativity that is mathematically rigorous and yet spells out in considerable detail the physical significance of the mathematics. It treats, in addition to the usual menu of topics one is accustomed to finding in introductions to special relativity, a wide variety of results of more contemporary origin. These include Zeeman’s characterization of the causal automorphisms of Minkowski spacetime, the Penrose theorem on the apparent shape of a relativistically moving sphere, a detailed introduction to the theory of spinors, a Petrov-type classification of electromagnetic fields in both tensor and spinor form, a topology for Minkowski spacetime whose homeomorphism group is essentially the Lorentz group, and a careful discussion of Dirac’s famous Scissors Problem and its relation to the notion of a two-valued representation of the Lorentz group. This second edition includes a new chapter on the de Sitter universe which is intended to serve two purposes. The first is to provide a gentle prologue to the steps one must take to move beyond special relativity and adapt to the presence of gravitational fields that cannot be considered negligible. The second is to understand some of the basic features of a model of the empty universe that differs markedly from Minkowski spacetime, but may be recommended by recent astronomical observations suggesting that the expansion of our own universe is accelerating rather than slowing down. The treatment presumes only a knowledge of linear algebra in the first three chapters, a bit of real analysis in the fourth and, in two appendices, some elementary point-set topology. The first edition of the book received the 1993 CHOICE award for Outstanding Academic Title. Special Relativity for the graduate student.

This book is NOT for the pop science buff or the novice with little understanding of Special Relativity.

This book is designed for graduate level students in mathematics or physics who want a deeper understanding of Minkowski space. It presupposes a solid foundation in SR.

Having said this, the book is phenomenal. It brings out startling relationship between mathematics and physics explaining esoteric phenomena in SR.

For example:

1) The author shows how Lorentz transformations can be realized as fractional linear transformations of the Riemann sphere. By doing so we can use the full power of complex analysis to derive far reaching results. One property of such tranforms is that they map circles to circles thus explaining why an observer at rest who sees a circle ( say lit by lights ) will also see a circle, NOT ellipse from length contraction, when he moves relative to the circle.

2) Using a simple example ( scissors, chair and rubber band ) the author shows how a 360 degree rotation may not leave a system in the same state requiring the need of a new mathematical object ( spinor ) to describe this transformation.

3) The author clearly develops the mathematics of spinors. In fact this is the best introduction to spinors I have read. He develops the notion of spin vectors and realizes spinors as multi-linear functionals with inputs as spin vectors, their duals, their conjugate, and the conjugate duals. He then lays out the transformation properties of the spinors and shows that certain spinors have exactly the transformation properties needed to model particles with spin.

4) There is a great section on the relationship of SL (2,C) to the lorentz group. The author shows how Minkowski space can be represented by certain combinations of 2x2 complex matrices and shows how SL ( 2,C) can then operate on these. This operation is actually equivalent to a lorentz transformation thus giving a mapping between the two groups. He then shows that we can easily analyze SL (2,C) by breaking it down into irreducible representations ( which are known ) and that to each of these representations there exist a unique representation of the Lorentz group ( provided certain conditions are imposed ). If that condition is not met the representation leads to the all familiar 2-valued representation of the Lorentz group one hears so much about. Thus by studying SL ( 2,C ) which we know alot about we can represent the Lorentz group which is generally harder to study but of the most relevance in physics.

The books is filled with such insights and I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to understand particle physics or relativity.

Fascinating but not for the general reader

Starting with a quick overview of certain structures from linear algebra (bilinear forms) the book moves to discussing Minkowski spacetime. Unfortunately for many, the text is highly esoteric without even a single descriptive section that doesn't make use of some fairly advanced mathematics.

The level of mathematical maturity required is comparable to a fourth year mathematics major at any decent university. The relationship between the mathematics involved and the special theory of relativity is fully explained.

A solid introduction to special relativity for the earnest mathematician.

The best textbook

This is the best textbook on continuum mechanics and I widely use it in teaching. Direct and index notations are well balanced. The presentation of tensor algebra and calculus in general coordinates is transparent and exhaustive. The presentation of Balance Laws enjoys unbeaten clarity. This book contains all you need to know before reading Truesdell&Noll.

A fast-paced, hilarious how-to packed with great suggestions

This is a rollicking, informative rant that's part how-to, part stand-up, and part manual on what you need to do get a date or a hookup with the girls you're texting.

I almost didn't buy this book because, duh, there's a LOT of free information on the internet on texting do's and don'ts (some of it great some not so much). But I went with it, mostly because I've seen the author on TV before and he pretty much knows what he's talking about.

I don't know that the author breaks much new ground here (although the part on how to get girls to send you naked pics is one for the books) but there's a certain genius to the book. First, the way it's laid out. It starts with the premise that you don't have her number and want it, so there's a chapter on how to get it ("How to get a girl's phone number without getting shot down"). It's incredibly clever.

The book then moves toward the two most likely scenarios--you got her number but she's not that into you or she is. From there, the advice starts rolling and it never stops--along with the jokes, pratfalls, examples of what not to do and other funny devices that had me in stitches. I think this is the thing that surprised me most--how damn funny the book is.

The book ends with a few hundred pre-written texts you can send, depending on what you want to achieve. Some real gems in there.

I would have liked to seen more problem scenarios but otherwise this book's a total keeper. I feel like my texting game just went up five notches.

Chock full of examples and funny as sh*t !

I'm not a big texter, but beginning to realize that's like someone in the 20th century saying I'm not a big electricity person. Many of my texts hit a dead end after 4 or 5 texts, and several of the women I dated complained about how I don't text often enough. This book offers some good tips on how to avoid that routine. Some of the ones that stuck out are not writing open-ended texts and being more specific, like instead of "What are you doing tonight?" with "Let's go see that new Drew Berrymore movie tonight and see if we're becoming a romantic comedy." LOL, its a funny book.

One of the best features is the listing of clever texts at the back of the book. It's like an index of things to send, including a small catalog of emoticons that will literally make you laugh out loud. The author says, "Make her laugh and you're halfway up her leg." Well, I used some of those texts and I swear I was 2/3 up her leg.

This helped a lot and I'm a pretty good texter...

This is a subject dear to my heart. I'm a pretty romantic guy, and because of this I was at first reluctant to send text messages to a woman that I was interested in. I thought it was more appropriate to call her, or even give her short hand-written notes or letters, and both of those are still effective and something I still use. But then I realized that text messages can be our modern version of a love letter, and can be as affectionate as the love letters that our grandparents exchanged while they were dating.

I've been told I am an exceptional texter by more than one woman, so I didn't buy this book to get any hints. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical that a strategy to send good text messages could be bottled like a magic potion (I think it has to be natural). What I found is a kindred spirit that appreciates the effectiveness of thoughtful texting, and someone who verbalizes some of my thought process when I use text messages to flirt.

Michael Alvear walks guys through each step of the early stages of dating, from getting a woman's number to playing it cool with the post-first date text messages. It's hilarious that he's even got sections on how to text "If The Date Did Not Go Well, But You Want Another" and "If The Date Didn't Go Well And You Don't Want Another---But She Does" which teach you how to score with and/or discard a woman without being a total douche.

There was plenty in the book that I disagreed with or didn't apply to my life. I'm still too old-school to ask a woman I'm interested in to send me nude pics, so I couldn't really wrap my head around Alvear's tips to accomplish that. Although, some of what he wrote made me realize that there is more room for sexting in my texting since I tend to keep my text messages PG-13.

My biggest beef with the book were the suggestions Alvear offered for clever texts. Some of them were funny, some were corny, but like I said, I think the clever has to come naturally or else it will come off as fake and scripted. There's a reason why pick-up lines usually don't work for guys, and it's the same thing with texting. When it comes to flirting, you either got it or you don't.

Despite my issues with the suggested canned text messages, I think this book can help guys who don't "got it" to find their "voice."
