challenging topics at the forefront of architecture

The book contains some lovely diagrams and photos that convey a sense of cutting edge methods in architecture. With case studies like Gehry Technologies building out the Fondation Louis Vuitton building in Paris. The curving metal spans evoke a design freedom and a sense of spaciousness all too often missing from standard building designs. Gehry truly had to build new and better simulations and what the text calls generative intelligence. All to handle the curved shapes implemented in glass and metal. No simple project, as the reader gets to appreciate.

Another chapter takes us into the use of huge data sets of a city's functioning. So there is ESRI's CityEngine; a SimCity writ much larger and more intricate. Or University College London's work on visualising city data in near real time. This chapter does make a sweeping suggestion that within 'the next decade the mobile phone will likely be defunct, with systems such as Google Glass...' Well maybe. For that to come about, Google and its competitors will have to severely upgrade the current rudimentary Google Glass. The latter seems terribly overhyped, at least to me. And perhaps to you too.

Well-Illustrated, Inspiring, and Full of Hype

This little book is a series of essays that are particularly well-illustrated. The essays are all focused on the employment of incredibly accurate digital metrology technology in architecture and in, well, hypothetically any process that involves the manipulation of forms in three dimensions. While I welcome a detailed discussion of these methods in practice (with some theory thrown in for good measure), this isn't so much a "book" as it is a magazine. The essays are free-standing. The worst thing that can be said about the prose here is that it has a marketing/promotional/public relations tone. There's a fine line between praising a technology or a company and hyping it, and there's more than a little hype to be found here.

Bottom line: if you want an update on some inspiring examples of high definition technology right now, pick this up. If you want a larger perspective, this "book" is not for you.

Interesting topics but offputting presentation

This publication covers a lot of ground and deals with some very interesting topics. While it can be excessively wordy, it manages to convey some useful information. However, I felt it fell short on the technical side and some of the articles are simply lost in a blizzard of buzzwords. Aside from the written presentation, some of the graphical choices were also suspect to me. Some of the images did not come across well on paper and some of the layout choices, particularly with regard to color made it difficult to read. For a publication that seems to put an emphasis on style over substance, its the style that makes the worst impression.

This textbook provides a first introduction to mathematical logic which is closely attuned to the applications of logic in computer science. In it the authors emphasize the notion that deduction is a form of computation. While all the traditional subjects of logic are covered thoroughly - syntax, semantics, completeness, and compactness - much of the book deals with less traditional topics such as resolution theorem proving, logic programming, and non-classical logics - modal and intuitionistic - which are becoming increasingly important in computer science. The book also provides a systematic treatment of the elements of set theory, a historical overview of its subjects, and an extensive annotated bibliography. No previous exposure to logic is assumed, and so this will be suitable for upper level undergraduate or beginning graduate students in computer science or mathematics.

good logic introduction to computer science students

This book is very carefully written to take care of its computer science and mathematics audience. The writing style is concise, yet unlike some other logic books, this one is far less dense and the content can easily be followed by an advanced undergraduate student (also, of course, by graduate students).
The book contains a relatively balanced coverage on logic. The six sections include Propositional Logic, Predicate Logic, PROLOG, Modal Logic, Intuitionistic Logic and Elements of Set Theory. There is also a concise appendix on the history of logic development.
I especially like the authors' careful treatment on the logics in PROLOG. Also, the authors have taken very good care in preparing the manuscript and my whole class can only find about ten typos after spending a whole semester using this book.
Indeed, this book can easily be re-titled to be "What Every Computer Scientists Should Know About Logic".
Highly recommended.

It is of great help for undergraduate computer science students

I am currently an undergraduate computer science student, and as such, I say that this book was of great help to me in understanding both the basics and more advanced features of logic. I can't say anything about the very advanced parts of the book but if the writing style is the same as in the first 2 chapters, then it should be a great book for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Coming from a rabid D. Johnson fan, plays are not his forte.

So if you're into plays, there are many contemporary playwrights out there that deserve to be given precedence over Johnson.

That being said, the plays are still Denis-Johnson witty and reward the reader with intelligent pages, but fall short of making an overall impression.

The plays in this book feature a couple introduced in Shoppers: Two Plays, a family ,and a talking-TV, among others.

There is no handling them

I got this book because I recently found out about NPS. And although my husband of 20 years doesn't have all the traits, he does fall in the category 'Run, Bambi, run.' The reason I have trouble with this book is because it is an illusion that you can handle him. For 20 years I have done everything in my power to feel connected to him. And I just realised that the few times I did, it was all about his pain. It took me a while to accept that this is how he is. I don't blame him. I don't blame the hurtfull things he has said or the controlling that he did. But I no longer blame myself either. I have only one piece of advice for any woman out there: Trust your gut!!! There was a moment in the beginning where it didn't feel right to me. I ended it and he came begging and crying. And I took him back. But what my gut told me all those years ago is still true today. trust yourself and know that you are worthy of a good man. Believe me, if I never fall in love again it is still better than being lonely and alone with a Narcissist.

Great Book!

Read this book if you are always getting involved with narcissistic men. This book details the signs of this personality type. Once, you know the signs of this personality disorder, you can protect yourself and your heart from disappointment. If you decide that you do want to be in a relationship with someone with this disorder, at least you will be able to cope and handle the challenging problems that can creep up. I recommend this book if you need to know the signs of this personality disorder....

This book is fairly basic and is not really reflective of true Narscissistic men. She really only canvasses the "showy look at me look at me types" Many narcissistic men are more cunning then this author understands. Malignant Self Love: Narcissism Revisited by Sam Vaknin is the best resource on this topic, he truly understand the various disguises of a Narcissist,and has cornered every one of them, out smarted them and will prepare you for the tricks, and the psychology behind it. This book should really be called something like "Men who think they are hot, special and tell lies". If you are involved with a narcissist you will need much heavier armour than this.
