If you are in sales this is a must read book

Selling is tough and George puts it all together with this book. It covers everything from how to prepare for each day to closing the tough sale. It is not high pressure but effective selling techniques to close the sale. I used this book to help train my clients and staff and they love it.
George has a fun, positive way to train and motivate. This book covers it all. The best way to use this book is with a highlighter and plenty of bookmarks. Keep it on your desk to use as a constant training book to see how much better you can be.

Master of his trade

This book is a must read if you are someone looking for inspiration and are having troubles getting your goals accomplished. It is a must have for any salesperson weather they are in a slump or not. It equipped me with lots of tools and great reminders on what it takes to close a deal. You can really tell that this man has allot of passion for what he does because it really comes out in his writing. I'm not a big reader, and the way this book is laid out it makes it easy to catch and keep my attention.

Add this one to the top shelf of the toolbox!

So little is known about this people and their vast country, the world’s ninth largest, though the Kazakhs have seen much of man’s vast history. From their roots as traders and herdsmen during the Silk Route period to their modern experience with atomic bomb testing and space age triumph, the history of Kazakh culture remains relatively unexplored in the Western world.

Even less known is author Abdi-Jamil Nurpeisov, venerated sage of Kazakh and Russian literature, though his books have been published in translation worldwide. Nurpeisov exposes Kazakh life to Western readers as Tolstoy did with Russians, and Marquez – Colombians. Nurpeisov’s eye-opening novel unveils the largely unknown history, life and customs of the Kazakhs.

"Blood and Sweat” is a sweeping tale about the vanishing way of life of Kazakhs in a small rural village. It has been compared to Sholokhov’s epic "And Quiet Flows the Don.” Through a kaleidoscopic panorama of events, an ethnographic tapestry, and the sophisticated fabric of Kazakhs’ past, Nurpeisov’s novels come to life in an enjoyable and educational reading. The drama of Blood & Sweat takes the reader through the national turmoil of 1900-1922 at which Kazakh state was born and via the personal dramatic development of three people. The human fight against the cruel elements of nature are balanced with the struggle between good and evil of its main protagonists. A murder and its consequence parallels the issues raised by Dostoyevsky.

Originally published as three separate novels, the first book, Twilight, appeared in 1961; the second book, Ordeal, in 1964; and the third book, Fall, in 1970. Their social relevance, subtle psychological insights, and the vivid originality of the characterizations have made the trilogy notable not only in Kazakh literature but in all Soviet literature.

Blood and Sweat is the only novel that truly describes in soul of the Kazakh people, and the birth of a nation with defined boundaries. This is the first time Nurpeisov’s trilogy has been translated and publishing into the English language, based on the authorized 2010 translation by the renowned Russian writer and translator Yury Kazakov.

Nurpiesov has won numerous awards, including three orders, Laureate of the State Prize of the USSR, and in 1985 he was given the honorary title "People’s Writer of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.” Nurpeisov is the founding president of PEN International in Kazakhstan.

Turn of the last century brings many changes to central Asia. The Tzar is deposed, but chaos ensues. The same people that lorded their authority over the fishing and shepherding villages of central Asia, still rule, and the people still have nothing.

Tanirbergen is a reigning lord. Elaman belongs to a fishing aul (village). There is always a struggle, but Tanirbergen dislikes Elaman with an unreasonable hatred, and does all he can to bring young Elaman down.

Soon to rise to power are the soviets – the Reds, heartily opposed by the Whites, and the country is plunged into war.

From two viewpoints, the rise of communism in Russia is seen through the eyes of these two factions, represented by Tanirbergen and Elaman. But the truth, seen only in hindsight, is that neither faction will bring freedom to peasants like Elaman. And at the same time those already in power, like Tanirbergen, stand to lose everything as well.

Like most Russian novels, this is a sad story, but it is powerfully told. You see the changes in central Asia as seen through the eyes of several other people as well. You experience their struggles, and weep with their losses. You learn to appreciate the culture of the Kazakhs and hope it can withstand the political changes coming to this great country.

Abdi-Jamil Nurpiesov does an admirable job in bringing this story to us. Read it with pleasure.

A must read for understanding Indian history

Contemporary India has an outsize influence from the Sikhs. Our current prime minister is a great representative of the community (with all disclaimers attached), and it is important to understand the genesis of the community, its philosophy and its strange pre-dominance of the Indian military.
The Punjab has largely been at the cross roads of civilization has pretty much been the doorway for powers that sought to invade India. By the late 15th century India was in a state of ferment. Muslim raiders were regularly invading the country and Hinduism if it weren't for the reformist zeal of the Bhakti movement was on the defensive. The time was ripe for a compromise and it came about from the remarkable intellect of Nanak.
Born in 1469, Nanak in a short span of 40 years as a teacher, he managed to carve out a niche which panned Hinduism and Islam. Monotheistic, yet worshipping a name. Casteless, in the pursuit of purity the religion was attractive to Hindu's and Muslims alike. The continuity of the religion was maintained by the legacy of Guru's (the word Sikh is purported to come from Shiksha or instruction from Sanskrit).
Nine Gurus followed, each of them leaving a stamp on the building of the movement into a religion, but importantly being in a volatile region, the following quickly got embroiled into the politics of monarchy feuds. Political patronage from Akbar quickly translated into spite from Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangazeb. By the time of the 9th Guru, the community had a strong militant streak, having witnessed the murder of its Guru's and the desecration of its shrines.
A key turning point in Indian history is the invasion(s) of Ahmed Shah Abdali in the late 18th century. A self claimed successor to Nadir Shah (in the right to invade India) , his repeated forays into the country gave the Sikh's a space in the power struggle that ensued. Fiefdoms of Sikh influence cropped up and it was waiting for a unifying force which came in the persona of Ranjit Singh.
Ranjit Singh's rule of forty years could well mark the zenith of the Sikhs. Blessed with boundless energy and strong traits of leadership, Ranjit Singh established a Sikh kingdom which was bound by the British on the east and the Afghans on the west. His generals had made forays well into Ladakh and his army was well organized and armed. The book culminates with the death of Ranjit Singh in the year 1839.
The book is well written and a breeze to read, and its understandable that the author laments opportunities lost by the Sikhs to consolidate power being a Sikh himself. The book lacks balance in parts, with an over-epmphasis on certain aspects. But no better authority could have penned this history down and for all its flaws the book would go down as an essential for understanding Indian history

This book has more in-depth historical research than Cunningham's A history of the Sikhs that was published in 1849. The book is due for a new edition, that discusses the migration of modern Sikhs from Punjab to UK, Canada, USA in search of freedom and better life.

there millions of sikhs all over the world, who would like to know about their heritage, in a nondistorted way. there is no reliable text that one could refer to. kushwant singh probably is the most reliable source at this point.we should not be deprived of this source of enlightenment.

Excellent machine design book.

This textbook is the main text assigned to the senior design class at my college for mechanical engineering. Very good book. However, The first half, maybe a little past half of the book is just a review of mechanics of materials and materials science. The first two chapters are a review of statics and a couple examples, maybe 3 on dynamics. I think this is good, but most students keep their dynamics, statics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, books to use as reference, so it feels like it is a waste of paper.
In the machine component section of the book, the second "half", It covers, bolts and fasteners, welds, springs, bearings, gears, shafts, brakes and clutches, and the last chapter is on other machine components such as belts and chains and stuff like that. The chapter on welds is extremely brief to a point where it is almost useless, one is better off going to the library or bookstore to actually buy a good reference on welded joints. The chapter on bearings could use some expanding, it feels "rushed". And the last chapter is almost useless as well, it's almost like a tease. They mention interesting and very useful machine components but they offer little calculations for them, like the chain drives and the torque converter. Why bother mentioning it? It's not a reference, it's an actual machine design book.
Another thing I found interesting is that for a couple of chapters and homework problems they refer you to information from websites online. Thing is, it is a book most would like to keep, but what five years from now? Will these web pages still be up?
Overall it is a good book. But better books are out there.

If you want quick and dirty estimations this is a good book to use. A lot of the equations in the book are derived using a lot of assuming and estimating. My professor calls them "canned equations". Take Power for example: W = Tn / 5252. That 5252 was the result of dividing 2pi by 33000. As a result your answers would be slightly off, but it's ok. Just make sure to use a factor of safety when you're designing something in real life.

Some annoying things about this book:
-It spends too much time covering prereq materials. It wastes too much space briefly covering mechanics of materials and material science.
-It makes assumptions out of nowhere with no rationale as to why. The author just cites a book that he read and just says to use this coefficient and account for its effect in order to solve the problem. That gets super frustrating when you're trying to figure things out for the first time.

F# for academia

This is a first rate survey of F# for academia.

F# is in the ML family of languages. ML had already started supplanting Scheme as a lingua franca in academia in the early 80s, so a book on F# for academia makes a lot of sense. In fact, F#'s fastest path towards acceptance in industry might well come via an indirect route through exposure in academia.

If you're in academia, using F# instead of C# would typically be a no-brainer. (For instance, you'd have to be glutton for punishment to write a compiler in C# when you could use F# instead.)

If you are a C# programmer, is this book for you? Or would an F# via C# book be better? That would depend on a lot of things; like personal preference, and how much of an academic background you have.

One thing I like about academic books is how concise they are. (.Net books, by comparison, are typically verbose; with thousand page tomes being common.)

Another thing I like about academic books are the examples; which are typically drawn from mathematics and computer science. (.Net books, by comparison, often have sophomoric examples with subject matter like zombies and cars; which I don't like.)

The coverage of monads is excellent. The discussion on monadic parsers is great material.

The fractal examples are fantastic; but showing them using Windows Forms (rather than XAML/WPF) seems schizophrenic to me. If you're cutting edge enough to want to use F#, why not also be cutting edge enough to use the latest and greatest GUI technology that Windows has to offer?!

Conclusion: highly recommended. Eloquent, nicely done; but weak on applied aspects of F# (albeit that's not the focus nor purpose of this book).

Excellent introduction to functional programming in F#

This is an excellent introduction to functional programming in F#. There are a lot of student exercises at the end of each chapter; a nice bonus for those using it as a college course text (let's hope many of you do just that). The order in which topics are covered builds in a very sensible way. Recursion and tail calls are done well early on. Everything relating to mutation is covered only in chapter 8. The advantage this book has over most other F# books is (a) its concentration on purely functional programming (b) the authors have been teaching functional programming for quite some time and are able to teach the topics logically and well. If you are coming from an OO background you may want to make this your first F# book to help you rethink your programming habits. There are many other good F# books too but others don't have the same 1D-focus on functional programming as this. Move on to those other books after you're rewired you head a little with this. Although I say 'rewired' I don't want to give the impression that functional programming is hard. FP is no harder than object oriented programming. Initially, functional programming seems harder than imperative programming but, as your imperative code grows it has a tendency to turn into a minefield making it harder to understand; every mutable property you expose turns on you to become yet another expanded dimension of a combinatorial complexity hell dragging you down. Well that's what I think of imperative programming. There are two annoyances knocking off 1 star. It is let down by too many typos (which a clever reader will be able to correct for herself). The ebook version is somewhat hard for me to read because the many image files all look too small; OK if it's read on a PC though.

A must have

This book is amazing. I just started learning F# in January for an independent study (I'm a grad student). I have Expert F# 3.0 and F# for Scientists - both are great but if I had to pick just ONE I would pick Functional Programming Using F#. I'm currently doing an internship, it's very hard/involved, and it's all in F#. This book connects a lot of dots in the "intermediate-expert" skill level range that were left unconnected by the other other two books. I had some serious nerd excitement over this book and I have a whole mess of books - nerd excitement is getting rarer. It was comparable to getting a new gadget or trying a new OS. It has examples, exercises, and an accompanying website - it is THE book to use for a class on the subject - not just because it fills a need for a functional intro with F# but because it is generally awesome as far as textbooks go.

To give another analogy that should be relevant to some of you...
Regarding my F# learning experience - reading this book was like the first time seeing calc based physics... "Ohhh! Well hell, I should have just started here first"

Famously painted on the walls of the Pharaohs' tombs, the Salukis' history intrigued English dog enthusiasts who were instrumental in popularizing the breed and importing it to Europe and the United States in the early 20th century.
This book tells the story of those who brought the Saluki to the West, most notably Florence Amherst, who discovered the dogs while in Egypt and went on to breed 50 litters. Other world travelers who fell under the Salukis' spell included Lady Anne Blunt, Austen Layard and Gertrude Bell. Also covered are lesser-known Saluki aficionados, mainly military officers who hunted with their hounds in Iraq, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt and sought to replicate that experience at home.

About the Author
Brian Patrick Duggan is the Director of Learning Services at California State University, Stanislaus. He has lived with Salukis for over 30 years and has bred 28 champions. He has also presented and published several articles on the history of Salukis, three of which have won awards from the Dog Writers Association of America.

Great book for a wonderful breed written by one who knows!

I have had many and plan on having many Salukis, as well as other related - type of dogs. Mr. Duggan has captured why I always come back to Salukis, as so many in the past have. I am not certain as to who domesticated whom, when regarding the breed, but will fully acknowledge that he has followed the recent history of the breed with a studious fidelity that gives credit to his hard work in tracking source material, both written and in interview.
There are no stupid Salukis -- those died in the desert 7000 years ago.

What a treasure!

Yes, this book is about Salukis, but it is about so much more than that. It is a snapshot into the lives of people during the late Victorian and Edwardian era. I found the lives of each individual instrumental with bringing Salukis to the Western world riveting. Their personal comments on their adventures while in the Middle East really brought that time and place to life for me.

Brian Duggan's research is wonderful in its thoroughness and his ability to bring history to life is priceless. This is a book any dog fancier will enjoy... not just saluki fanciers.
