The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Herge's signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. Egypt in the sixties and seventies for the Salem family was a balance between keeping Islamic tradition at home and attending the secular system of public schools, which would provide us with the best of opportunities, and form us into what my parents considered model Muslims. Both traditional Islamic practice and a breadth of scholarship were to be revered, in line with the great Islamic thinkers that always inspired us like Imam Mohamed Abdu and M. Rashid Reda.1

I was first exposed to other cultures and peoples when I traveled on foot and auto-stop on a forty-day journey to Europe in the summer of 1974. I was only fourteen at the time, but that journey taught me many valuable lessons, including the importance of being independent, self-sufficient, relating to others and understanding between cultures and people. That journey to Europe was followed by three more journeys to Europe and the Middle East for the following three summers, before our family emigrated and settled in California in the late seventies. Having lived in three different countries on three different continents, I have had no choice but to consider many different points of view, not only in my own acclimation from Egyptian to American culture, and then to Indian culture and back to American, but in my desire to understand the Middle East conflict at its root. Many of my relatives and friends still reside in Egypt. Therefore, my interest in solving the conflict is both on an ideological and personal level.

My personal and global journey included study at Berkeley and Stanford universities, after which I established myself in a real estate investment business. I then embarked on a trek to the Indian subcontinent, where I spent some time with the pacifist Muslim Tablighi Jamaat movement and experienced again a taste of wandering, joined with outreach to other Muslims and simplicity in living. My passion for solving the conflicts in the Middle East led me to pursue a master’s degree at Yale Divinity School, then a PhD defended at AlAzhar University, Cairo, Egypt, which I was granted in 2015.

A clear way forward

Standing tall like a lighthouse - honestly - on a cliff over turbulent seas, this book illuminates a pathway for genuine reconciliation between the Jewish and Arab peoples. Dr. Salem argues for taking a fresh look at the foundational principles of both cultures - particularly their sacred religious texts - as the best way to encourage open discussion and to arrive at a safe and reliable process for mutual accommodation. He reminds us that both peoples have lived quite amicably with each other throughout most of their history and that they simply need to start over again and relearn what amounts to a close family relationship. For anyone who has an active interest in seeing a just and lasting peace come to the Holy Land - and that should include everyone - this book provides important and valuable insights and a clear blueprint for action.

A Must Read!

Dr Omer Salem’s excellent book is a must-read for all interested in the Middle East and in relations among the Abrahamic faiths. He presents innovative and workable ideas. Once his basic assumptions are laid down, there is a sing-song quality to his book, as he restates his ideas in several different ways for the myriad of audiences he is trying to reach. Take a look at his incredible resume on the ‘net and you will be amazed at the breadth of one man’s journey. Exposed to so many cultures and societal strata, and a proven patient listener, it is no wonder Omer has come up with proposals for Middle East peace that feel familiar and workable. Indeed, this is a must read!

Religion and the Change of Hearts

This is a unique piece of work. It speaks to Muslim traditionalists, but let's the reader eavesdrop on the real 'insider' issues. Because scriptural authority has been used to justify contempt for Jews, Muslim leaders can only change attitudes by using scriptural authority to justify respect for Jews. This is the missing piece in the problem. Hearts and minds of young Arab Muslims can be moved by religious leaders and parents that use their scriptures to say Allah requires us to treat the Jews as our respected cousins. Only then will the real desire for peaceful negotiations replace the current ambivalence that keeps cold war (and worse) alive.

Though this 10th Pennsylvania Dutch mystery installment's blend of intrigue, wit and recipes will likely satisfy Myers's fans, it's unlikely to win new followers. In her latest outing, Magdalena Yoder, the Mennonite keeper of the PennDutch Inn, joins forces with the Bedford, Pa., police to investigate the death of a prisoner in the local jail. Clarence Webber, credit-fraud perp and predator of wealthy women of a certain age, has been poisoned with arsenic in a meal provided by the PennDutch Inn. Magdalena, who is anxious to clear her name, starts interviewing the visitors he had in prison, and she soon has a list of suspects, each with an ax to grind. Neglecting her inn and her newly acquired foster child to follow clues to Maryland, Magdalena throws herself wholeheartedly into solving the mystery of Clarence's death. She must be getting close, because on the return trip, someone runs her car off the road. But the resilient Magdalena wraps her broken ribs with duct tape and keeps searching for clues. Unfortunately, the characters are generally distasteful and it's Magdalena herself who's the worst. She may love one-liners there are about three per page but she's the only one laughing; she comes across as a spiteful, judgmental woman in the midst of a weak plot and a sloppy story line. Myers has, however, devised a group of recipes for grits, that staple of Southern breakfasts, that proves there can be more to gruel than meets the eye.

Another Hit for Tamar Myers' PennDutch Series!

I love Magdalena Yoder - I admit that I'm more attracted to the quirky characters and the one-liners than to the mystery itself, but I thought the saga of the late Mr. Webber and his marital shenanigans was clever and intriguing. Magdalena's developing romance with Abe the Babe continues to fascinate; one hopes she will have better luck than she did with Aaron.
Although I followed Magdalena's investigation of the murder with interest, I was a little disappointed that the author didn't develop the relationship with Alison a little more fully - particularly since the chapter that introduced Alison was used as the "teaser" in the back of the paperback edition of The Crepes of Wrath. I was expecting more and hope Alison's story will be developed in future PennDutch Inn books.
I have read several reviews of other PennDutch Inn books in which the reviewers complained that Magdalena "wailed" too much - and indeed, she does seem to wail quite a bit. I was amused to see at least three places in Gruel and Unusual Punishment where another character said to Madgalena, "You sure do wail a lot," or words to that effect.
The only fault I will find with Gruel and Unusual Punishment is sloppy editing. Early in the first chapter, Magdalena says that she got the recipe for the shrimp and grits dish that did the unfortunate Mr. Webber in on her "vacation in Charleston, South Carolina." Later she remarks on having been to the Inland Sea in Tennessee on her "only vacation." These two statements aren't necessarily contradictory, since it would be entirely possible to visit both Charleston and the Inland Sea on the same vacation from Pennsylvania, but when Magdalena is preparing to go to Maryland in the course of her criminal investigation, she states that "the only time I'd been out of Pennsylvania was to go to Ohio." Ms. Myers' editor should have caught this.
All in all, I enjoyed Gruel and Unusual Punishment as much as I enjoyed all the other PennDutch books - which was a lot. I look forward eagerly to the next one.

Light hearted and heavy handed

Con man Clarence Webber has had a long and checkered career, which ends with his death by arsenic poisoning in Hernia's city jail. Magdalena Yoder becomes involved, since her inn supplies the jail's food, but it is soon evident that the poison was placed in the Shrimp and Grits (recipe provided) after the meal arrived in Webber's cell. Since the town's inept police chief is completely mystified, Magdalena volunteers to run down the perpetrator among the four persons who were known to have visited the prisoner. As she retraces Webber's trail through south central Pennsylvania and into Maryland, she soon discovers that the victim left more than empty wallets and broken hearts behind-to say nothing of a long list of individuals who had more than enough other reasons to do him in. GRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT is, as the title would indicate, a light-hearted novel, replete with outlandish descriptions of eccentric people. The story sometimes lapses into heavy-handed humor, but the overall effect is still a positive one. While Myers passes along more information on cooking grits than the average reader might want to know, that doesn't seriously detract from an amusing work.

Good Book

I thought this book was the best out of the Pennsylvania-Dutch mysteries Tamar Myers has written. In my opinion, it kept me interested right to the end. I especially like the part where Magdalena's ex-husband shows up. I liked how more of the town was involved, it gave the plot a nice twist. I recommend this book to any who enjoys a good humored mystery.

This book should be required reading in high school. I have 3 friends who left God's green earth by suicide and I don't think any of them would have done so if they knew and practiced what Dr. Leaf explains in this book. We MUST learn to focus on the positive side of our lives rather than focusing on the bad! Obviously we have all suffered thru something if not ALOT! We still have the Awesome Promises of God to encourage us and give us hope! What you focus on is what you will become! I nearly became a casualty myself after losing my wife to bad circumstances and focusing on the negatives and would have, could have, should have... Dr. Leaf saved my LIFE with her many years of research! No longer do I focus on the negatives for more than a few minutes as God is not through with me yet and he came so that I would have life and life more abundantly! PLEASE read this book and learn what your "Stinking Thinking" is doing to your body, mind and soul! YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!!! HALLELUJAH!!!

Awesome Book!!!

My father in law let me borrow this book to read, and it has helped so much with my anxiety. I just had to buy my own copy because I needed to go back and reread. As anyone knows who suffers from anxiety you have to retrain your brain. Dr Leaf has an awesome way of explaining things and she rely' s on The Great Physicians word to do it; we cannot over come anything without Jesus Christ!! Would recommend this book to anyone who suffers from anxiety!!!

Hope for Creating Right-Thinking Patterns

This book is well written from a knowledgeable scientific perspective and has a fair number of schematics for helping to explain the concepts. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The results of wrong-thinking are easily explained in light of the types and amounts of chemicals that are released into our systems, with far-reaching consequences at the DNA level...which Ms. Leaf also explains are easily reversible as we unravel and resolve the thought processes that got us there in the first place.

She has presented her material in an easy-to-understand and engaging manner and inspires hope in the heart.

But when their grandfather tells them mythic tales of mermaids with magical healing powers, Jamie clings to hope. Ned, it is revealed, has cystic fibrosis, which seems to be getting worse, and Jamie is convinced that this creature has come to save his brother. Avery captures Jamie's powerful denial of Ned's illness with heartbreaking precision and deliberate pacing. Tom Avery is the author of the middle-grade novels My Brother’s Shadow, which was longlisted for the Carnegie Medal and named a Bank Street College of Education Best Book of the Year with outstanding merit, and Too Much Trouble, winner of the Frances Lincoln Diverse Voices Children’s Book Award. He was born and raised in London in a very large, very loud family, descendants of the notorious pirate Henry Avery. About the Author
Michael B. Stoff is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Plan II Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin. The recipient of a Ph.D. from Yale University, he has been honored many times for his teaching, most recently with election to the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. He is the author of Oil, War, and American Security: The Search for a National Policy on Foreign Oil,1941-1947, co-editor (with Jonathan Fanton and R. Hal Williams) of The Manhattan Project: A Documentary Introduction to the Atomic Age, and series co-editor (with James West Davidson) of the Oxford New Narratives in American History. He is currently working on a narrative on the bombing of Nagasaki.

James West Davidson received his B.A. from Haverford College and his Ph.D. from Yale University. A historian who has pursued a full-time writing career, he is the author of numerous books, among them After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection (with Mark H. Lytle), The Logic of Millennial Thought: Eighteenth Century New England, and Great Heart: The History of a Labrador Adventure (with John Rugge). He is co-editor with Michael Stiff of the Oxford New Narratives in American History, in which his most recent book appears: 'They Say': Ida B. Wells and the Reconstruction of Race.

Mark H. Lytle received his Ph.D. from Yale University and is Professor of History and Environmental Studies. he has served two years as Mary Ball Washington Professor of American History at University College, Dublin, in Ireland. His publications include The Origins of the Iranian-American Alliance, 1941-1953, After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection (with James West Davidson), America's Uncivil Wars: The Sixties Era from Elvis to the Fall of Richard Nixon, and, most recently, The Gentle Subversive: Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, and the Rise of the Environmental Movement. He is co-editor of a joint issue of the journals of Diplomatic History and Environmental History dedicated to the field of environmental diplomacy.

Brian DeLay (Ph.D., Harvard) is Assistant Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. He specializes in colonial and 19th century U.S. and Mexican history. His scholarship has won awards from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic, the Western History Association, the Council on Latin American History, the American Society for Ethnohistory, the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association, and the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations. He is the author of War of a Thousand Deserts: Indian Raids and the U.S.-Mexican War (Yale, 2008), and is currently at work on a book about the international arms trade and the re-creation of the Americas during the long nineteenth century. Christine Leigh Heyrman is Associate Professor of History at the University of Delaware. She received a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University and is the author of Commerce and Culture: The Maritime Communities of Colonial Massachusetts, 1690-1750. Her book exploring the evolution of religious culture in the Southern U.S., entitled Southern Cross: The Beginnings of the Bible Belt, was awarded the Bancroft Prize in 1998.
