About the Author
John B. Judis was a senior editor of "The New Republic" and recently a senior writer for "The National Journal." He is the author of six books, including "Genesis: Truman, American Jews, and the Origin of the Arab-Israeli Conflict" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2014), "The Folly of Empire: What George W. Bush Could Learn from Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson" (Scribner, 2004), "The Emerging Democratic Majority" with Ruy Teixeira (Scribner, 2002), and "The Paradox of American Democracy: Elites, Special Interests, and Betrayal of Public Trust" (Pantheon, 2000). He has written for numerous publications, including "The New York Times Magazine," "Mother Jones," and "The Washington Post." Born in Chicago, he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Philosophy from the University of California Berkeley. He lives in Silver Spring, MD.

Modern populism: anger, but in the wrong direction

The slim book provides a brief but solid history of populist candidates and positions — and the social conditions that drive their popularity — from the Molly Maguires to anarchists, from communists to socialists and from Huey Long to Bernie Sanders (and, on the flip side, Marine Le Pen in France).
Judis is a fine writer and historian, providing deeply researched context for the current surge of populism in the U.S. and in Europe, on the left and right side of the political spectrum. Populism, he notes, is more about context — finding strength and nobility in the “common” man and woman and demonizing of political or wealthy elites — than stated policies.
He tracks the current strain of populism back to nineteenth century America and led by rural voters who felt they were losing power and influence to the urban elite (sound familiar?). It has emerged time and again as disillusionment with the ruling class triggers anger and resentment — he considers Ross Perot, for example, a populist candidate — and spread across the globe, finding especially fertile ground in Western Europe (as evidenced by Brexit, the National Front Party, etc.).
His examination of the New Deal response to excess and wealth inequality was brief but especially powerful: “The New Deal approach, which used government to counter capitalism’s tendency toward unemployment, inequality, monopoly, and environmental pollution, helped produce several decades of post-World War II prosperity.”
The theme that government intervention is needed to prevent capitalism from eating itself — used in Bonnie and Clyde: Resurrection Road — is slowly picking up steam. But for now, the failure of our economic system to protect workers and communities is causing an odd, misdirected anger as we’re forced to fight for a shrinking pool of resources even as the wealthy elites realize unparalleled returns. As a result, “… what parts of the middle class feared most was having to subsidize though higher taxes or healthcare premiums those in the lower classes or illegal and recent legal immigrants. It encouraged a right wing rather than a left wing response to the Great Recession and to neoliberalism.”
In other words, the response to very real pressures of a dysfunctional economic system was initially grounded in myopic self interest and directed at those with the least agency to change the economic landscape, rather than an honest examination of a system that stacks the deck against everyone except the wealthy elite.
A response from the left, as he notes, was predictably expected — from Occupy to Bernie Sanders — but it was too little, too late to shape the pivotal recent elections.
When speaking directly of the Sanders campaign, he said, “… younger voters’ attraction to socialism is the flip side of their growing disillusionment with capitalism in the wake of the Great Recession.” It would seem young America, at least, is mad in the right direction.
The book is a fast and worthy read if only to better understand populism and separate the rhetoric from the policies, which are based on the needs of the “common” person and stand in opposition to the wealthy elite. It is a uniquely American and critically important strain of political thought. At present though, it seems to have been hijacked by racism and self-interest, and manipulated by the very wealthy elite that populism should be fighting against. Focusing energy and anger in the wrong places actually protects the dysfunctional status quo that generates the anger.
We need populist solutions to ensure the benefits of capitalism are more fairly distributed. We need a Newer Deal. We need to turn the rhetoric into actions that raise the fortunes and well being of the working class — those who make and spend and consume within the local systems — and we need to help those who are down on their luck to ensure they can reenter the working class. Instead, we argue about the wrong things while the wealthy elites continue to extract wealth, hoard it and hide it and prevent our economy from benefiting the larger population.
We need real populist candidates and not, as history has too often shown, politicians who claim to speak for the “Forgotten Man” (and woman) while simply lining their pockets.

A memo tracking back the surge of discontent for so long ignored

Populism has many forms, had many voices and surged to surface of the political agenda, raised by students, white or blue collars and other identifiable groups fingering at the establishment of ignorance or supreme bliss.
While the democratisation process made not only the gears of governance but the oversight of it available to many, the chances of conquering the wave of discontent paved the road to power for many able yet malcontent characters, willing to prove their point rather than to improve and build on the achieved stable platforms.
The establishment should take heed of the swift power that can unravel aeons of progress in a whiff and how possible the most radical scenarios can come to life - and engage them with their own critical thinking rather than to ignore, close in and cast them away. The power of technology today enables both the verticalisation of data - where everyone hear what they want to hear - as well as the powerful mobilisation effect where a simple call for rebellion sounds louder than the sophisticated voice for reason.
Ignorance, a blunt approach painted in black and white is what makes it very dangerous and appealing to the disenfranchised and uninvolved citizens.

Precient review of the ongoing flow of american politics

Along with many others, the election was somewhat of a shock for me - a typical upper left hand coast academic. The day after the election, I heard an interview with the author and went straight to amazon and bought this book. I think he does a good job at describing the context of the trends within our political culture, however I get the distinct impression that they were even more surprised by the results than I was. One of the comments he made during the interview related to his pessimism that the driving forces of the populist movement that backed Trump (or Sanders) would be satisfied by the result. Specifically, much of what was felt to be the problem, such as the loss of quality jobs for low skill, low education workers, had no easy solution.
