Jennifer Greene is an agile coach, development manager, business analyst, project manager, tester, speaker, and authority on software engineering practices and principles. She’s been building software for over twenty years in many different domains including media, finance, and IT consulting. She’s worked with teams of excellent developers and testers to tackle tough technical problems and focused her career on finding and fixing the habitual process issues that crop up along the way.

Andrew Stellman is a developer, architect, speaker, agile coach, project manager, and expert in building better software. Some mistakes, but not a deal breaker

I wrote the below comment for Rita's book "PMP Exam Pre, eighth edition), but I will also,post it here for Head First!!! Let me say that Head First is an outstanding book, some mistakes but if you know the concepts you can work through them. If you have time yo study both Rita's book and Head First I HIGHLY recommend studying both! You can get through Head First in 2 weeks its a very fun read.

I passed my PMP two days ago! I took a. 4 day bootcamp which was a waste of money, but the instructor from the bootcamp told me to buy Rita's book to get a better understanding. I also bought Head First PMP, McGraw-Hill's PMP Certification Mathematics with CD-ROM , I also signed up for a 20 day pass on PMStudy to rake practice test. When I took the exam I felt very confident and was able to breeze through the questions. I was able to pass all the sections!!!! I truly believe all the above resources really helped me. If you cannot get all the above resources or only have a short window to study I recommend the following:

1) DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON A BOOTCAMP!!!!!!
2) Buy Rita's book and read as much as you can
3) Get McGraw-Hill's PMP Certification Mathematics with CD-ROM to help with the math section (take the practice test on the CD-ROM) 1-2 days before the test. Make sure you understand calculating critical path, and all the necessary formulas (KNOW YOUR FORMULA'S IN YOUR SLEEP!!!!, EAT, DRINK, SLEEP, PLAY WHATEVER YOU DO KNOW YOUR FORMULA'S!!!!!) especially AC, PV, EV, CV, CPI, SV, SPI, EAC, BAC, ETC, TCPI, SD, VARIANCE, PV (PRESENT VALUE), Communication Channel
4) Sign up for PMStudy 20 days worth of testing!!!! Take the first test to see where you are, study study study the knowledge areas where you are weak take exam 2 if you get less than 80 go back to Rita's book! Take exam 3 get an 80 or better than take exam 4 the morning BEFORE your test so that your in a testing mind frame.
5) I LOVED Head First PMP but if you don't have time to study everything I would say to buy this book as a companion to Rita's book. This book is a fun read and makes the concepts easier to understand
6) Make sure your referencing the PMBOK 5 (Most Important)

During the exam (make sure your doing good on time before you follow these directions)
1) If you believe in prayer (PRAY) - ummmm you also do not need to tell anyone your taking the test, just in case........
2) Breathe and relax
3) Do the first 50 - 75 questions (Take a break, go to the bathroom, get some water, sit in the waiting room, just get away from the test)
4) Go back in do the next 25 - 50 questions (take another break)
5) Keep doing this until you finish
6) Before you review your questions, take your final break come back review your questions, (I took another break!!!!!), did the survey, packed up my things so I wasn't steering at the screen, and BOOM THERE IT WAS!!!!! Birds started singing, confetti fell from the ceiling, and people began to dance!! (well maybe in my head, but you get the point!)

Really Helpful

This book is really a helpful study tool for those who are getting started with their PMP study.
It really simplifies the information and uses an attractive approach to get the needed information into your head.
I strongly recommend this book for those who get bored from reading traditional text books.
Despite of some minor mistakes and typos, this book is still awesome.
I just passed my PMP test on 1/20/2014 using this book as my primary study guide and i found that it had 90% of the information i needed to pass the exam..
I also used some other practice questions books to help practice.

Special Advice:
When you buy this paper book, visit the Author's website mentioned on the last page register, and buy yourself a soft copy of the book for an extra 5$.
it will be useful to print exercise pages and practice them with your own hands, while keeping your original paper copy clean.

Passed the PMP Exam on the first try

The Rita Mulcahy book and the Head First PMP book were my two main study materials for the PMP exam. I picked up this book after the laborious read of the Rita book that would put me to sleep in minutes. I am very happy I did.

Unlike the Rita book, the Head First is MUCH easier to read. It is graphic and not text-intensive which leads to a better understanding of the material (in my opinion). More that that, the book builds confidence and gives you a sense of accomplishment that the material is actually sticking. The questions are exactly what you will find on the PMP exam (unlike the Rita book which are harder / more confusing). As a matter of fact, I swear that some questions were almost verbatim to what I was presented with today on the actual exam. This is important, as I don't need to fail lifting 1,000 lbs if the requirement is only to lift 100 lbs.

I'm not a huge fan of reading, however this book makes it much less painful. There is a lot of white space, pictures, diagrams and games which makes it much more interactive - unlike a text book.

As others have mentioned, there are some typos / mistakes (references to answer pages are incorrect for example) which is why it gets the 4 star rating. I'm no scholar so if I can find typos the editors should have found them first.

Even with that, I found this book invaluable and which I had only read it rather than wasting my time on the Rita book.

Today I passed the PMP exam with a "Proficient" rating in all the knowledge areas and I feel I owe most of that to this book.

As a bonus, it is 1/2 the price of the Rita book. Worth price paid.

Learning to read Spanish can be fun!

I just got Volume 1 and I've already ordered the next four volumes. I plan to use them as my Spanish language primers. I believe it will be more compelling to read a foreign language that I don't completely understand, if I already know that I will like the storyline and characters. As for the actual experience of reading the story with minimal Spanish language instruction, it's very easy to figure out what words mean without having to rely on a Spanish/English dictionary, because the text is conversational and the artwork is very helpful in establishing the context of what is being said. I definitely recommend these to any of the fans of The Walking Dead who are learning Spanish or who are becoming conversant in Spanish.

My review has zero to do with the storyline and everything to do with the product.

If you know the Walking Dead series, then what else is there to say? The TV series follows the books fairly closely, though there are marked differences, and how you like or don't like it will depend a lot on which you did first: read the books or watch the TV series.

Most importantly for me, however, is that I got these because I'm a beginning Spanish student and wanted to get something I would enjoy reading and which used idiomatic, every-day conversational Spanish versus "book Spanish". In that regards, these books are extremely helpful, in spite of some minor grammar or spelling issues, which are, I suspect, more the result of sloppy editing than a mediocre command of the language. Being that the books are published in California, I suspect the Spanish is "Mexican" Spanish, as some of the words and phrases used are "unknown" or "sound strange" to friends in Spain. A lack of space in the cartoon boxes sometimes results in poor spacing between words, so that "periods" and/or commas can't be seen, which affects comprehension. Nevertheless, an excellent and entertaining way to learn another language.

A refreshing and welcome approach

Gibilisco is a good and effective communicator and I thought this book was refreshing. It doesn't pretend that someone will learn this material without effort (they won't, as any teacher will tell you). He covers everything and understands and explains what students don't understand. Also, the truth is that repetition is important and effective and Gibilisco uses repetition to drive home important points. I would recommend this book to my AP class. It is a more student focused and pleasant read than a traditional calculus textbook. There are a few typos in the book, but errata are posted on the net for readers who find them distracting. I especially recommend this book to adults who "knew calculus once", this is a good read.

Calculus (for those who forgot more than they remember)

I don't think I could pass my calculus course without this book. It breaks each topic down into the smallest detail and helps me understand the subject matter. To reinforce my learning, it constantly asks whether I am confused. If I am confused, it provides illustrations that break the topic down even further.

Now all I need is a book just like this to cover the trigonmetric functions associated with each calculus topics.

Stan Gibilisco's Calculus Know It All

The title was quite ambitious and I was prepared for some heavy mental lifting, but this book made the subject surprisingly accessible to me. I have always known a thing or two about algebra, geometry and trigonometry but I never got into calculus to any significant degree. Now I can say that I have a good overview and grasp of the fundamentals, which is what I needed professionally and also for my own peace of mind. Calculus is a wonderful subject, and it gives a whole new dimension to a lot of things that I am interested in -- astronomy, electronics, building construction, to name a few. Stan know how to turn a phrase, and that makes his explanations vivid and memorable.

Leigh L. Thompson joined the Kellogg School of Management in 1995. She is the J. Jay Gerber Distinguished Professor of Dispute Resolution and Organizations. along with the poor structure of the chapters

This was the textbook for my Negotiation class, and it has some serious flaws in my opinion...

First, the layout is disorganized, and the concepts are often strangely linked and overlap in a way that makes understanding the ideas much more difficult.

Second, there are grammatical mistakes throughout. This, along with the poor structure of the chapters, makes it hard to believe that the book was ever proofread.

There are also some other issues – some ideas seem contradictory in the book since the author compiles findings from many different sources. However, as a result, there is often no clear framework for understanding negotiations more clearly. Facts from other sources are often stated without commentary on how that finding links to strategic frameworks more generally. Again, this relates to the idea of poor organization and overall flow of the book. Definitions of certain terms are often unclear, and even when they are given they are subsequently used in contexts that do not align with the initially given meaning.

Overall, it has some decent insight to improving negotiation abilities; there are also many interesting examples of negotiations throughout (though the applicability to the section those negotiations are in varies). However, the author lacks sufficient ability to coherently structure the ideas in textbook form.

It is then that she sees the Spanish slavers riding straight toward her.

Wondering about authenticity

I am from the four corners area and am wondering about how much research Scott C'Dell did for this book? I have never heard of mesquite growing around here or aspen in Canyon de Chelly or of the pueblo people eating dog meat and...... the owl a GOOD OMEN? I don't think so!!!! Any one from this area that has any knowledge of the Navajo culture knows that OWLS ARE NOT GOOD OMENS!!! I am reading this book with my class and am so frustrated by the fact that such a good author would be so negligent. The other students don't seem to notice the problems that I have with the book, except of course the Navajo students. I was happy to see the reviews from children who agree with what I was thinking. I am an adult student.

What it's like to be a Navaho girl

The book I read was called Sing Down the Moon. It is about a Navaho girl named Bright Morning. She tells about all the adventures she has had. She tells about when slave traders captured her and what she does. I learned about Navaho life and how the United States soldiers treated Navaho people. The soldiers forced the Navaho people out of their canyon and forced them to walk to Fort Sumner. I liked the book very much. I liked hearing what life was like for the Navahos in the 1860's from the point of view of a girl close to my age. It was very exciting. There was a lot of action. I especially liked the part where Bright Morning and her husband Tall Boy escape the Long Knives. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Navaho history and likes an exciting adventure story.

The Navaho Trail of Tears

One morning, while Navaho fourteen year old Bright Morning and her friend Running Bird are out in the fields of their home, Canyon de Chelly, tending sheep, they see strange men approaching. Before they can stop it, Bright Morning is kidnapped by the men, who turn out to be Spanish Slave-holders, and take her to a South-Western town, dominantly Mexican. She is sold as a slave to a Spanish speaking family, where she meets another slave, who can speak her language. Bright Morning tries desperately to find a way to get back to her people. The other slave imprisoned with her tells her the way, and Bright Morning is able to make a narrow escape back to her people. But when she returns, she finds her village under occupation of the "Long Knives", or American soldiers. After she is forsed into an arranged marriage with another Indian, Tall Boy, the Long Knives push the Navaho out of their land- and onto one of the most memorable events in American history- the Trail of Tears. Many all around her suffer and eventually die as they continue to walk on.

A very well written story, and very informative.

In this delightful book, first published in 1973, kids are encouraged to ponder shapes they may never have considered before: "Just think about the shape of beans and flowers and mice and big machines!" Dr. Seuss's illustrations are in silhouette (for the purpose of accenting the outlines of figures), but are nonetheless up to par with his usual wacky, amusing style. Soaring well beyond the mundane arena of circles, triangles, and squares, here we are challenged to consider "the shape of camels … the shape of bees and the wonderful shapes of back door keys!" Practice in Noticing Small Differences in Outline Shapes

One of the most difficult problems that many beginning readers have is to notice those pesky little differences between letters (like b and d, and q and p). Many children don't focus that much and get a general impression of a shape when looking at a letter or a group of letters. This interesting beginning reader helps you child to "see" the benefits of studying detail more closely.
The book is primarily a series of solid shapes (mostly black on white) set off with bright colors used in some shapes, as backgrounds for others, and as rectangles around words. Each one is a different item. Some of the many items silhouetted include a bug, balloon, bed, bike, beans, flowers, mice, big mahines, elephants, ships, teapots, water dripping, bird cages, peanuts, pineapple, noses, grapes, glasses, scissors, the various shapes that gum can be pulled into, smoke, marshmallows, fires, mountains, roosters, horses, tires, camels, bees, back door keys, spider webs, clothes, garden hose, mug, imaginary beings (like a BLOGG), trombone, fish, whale and a frog. This is not all, but it is more than half.
As you can imagine, a young child will be able to identify very few while an older child will get almost all of them. Not all of the profiles have words associated with them in the text.
As a result, this book should be read in different ways at different stages of development. For example, two year olds will identify more objects if they get a hint from you. Also, if you child likes sounds, you could make a sound like the object for your clue.
For an older child, you can also work together to spell the names of the shapes that are not in the text. For someone about to graduate from the book, you could try creating some rhymes with the shapes that are not mentioned.
The book itself is simple to read, and has a typical Dr. Seuss rhyming scheme.
The key lessons are summarized as:
"Everything comes in different shapes."
"No shapes are ever quite alike."
There is also nice encouragement for your child to feel special, for having a unique shape. That's a nice tie-in to the concept of encouraging your child to notice the small differences that help in reading. This point is brought home in the end when the child narrator says, "I say, 'HOORAY for the shapes we're in!'"
This book will be of most value for a child who is starting to have some success in identifying letters, so although this is a beginning reader . . . it's not the first reader you should use.
After you have enjoyed this book, you might also do some art projects in which your child picks out items that she or he wants you to cut out. You could paste them onto a card along with the item's name, and create your own flash cards for words you child wants to learn!
Notice the small things, so you can see the big picture!

This book has been a favorite of my 22 month old daughter since she was 3 months! It is a lively, fun book that is classic Seuss. I would definetly recommend it as a first book.

Lots of shapes and great Dr. Seuss rhymes in this sturdy board book.

Although everything is shown in silhouette, there is plenty of color and action and my kids (boy and girl; now 3 and 5) have always like it. There are herds of elephants, steaming machines, flowers, critters and more.

As the first spotlight reviewer did a good job of summarizing the assortment of critters and things that one can find I won't say more.

But in regards to the use of silhouettes instead of pictures or detailed line drawings at least one reviewer has said that they didn't like them. But I think they miss the point. The book is about *shapes* and how much you *can* identify without the `advantage' of a detailed picture. And looking at the silhouette and identifying the item/creature is part and parcel of the mental exercise, just like the rhythm and rhyme of the story. If you used pictures you'd hardly learn anything about `shapes' would you.

No, the use of shadows is just right for exercising young minds. For reaching for that Aristotelian abstract (LOL) of what is `skunk'. And it is amazing how even the littlest of people can tell a skunk from a cat even with Seuss' odd artwork.

Five Stars. 19 pages of fun for boys and girls. This sturdy boardbook is a good read-aloud that stretches the imagination.
