Plato in a convenient & affordable paperback volume

After years of being dissatisfied with different paperback editions of Plato, I finally stumbled across this Dover Thrift Edition of Plato's four most essential biographical dialogues. Focusing on the life and person of Socrates, this razor-thin paperback volume is the most affordable and accessible introduction to Plato that you will find on the market. Rather than plunging you directly into the Republic and other more abstract writings, it wisely focuses on what we all love about Plato: His dialogues centering on the eccentric life and Christ-like death of his great teacher Socrates. This English translation is the old standard one, of course, but it's a wonderfully slender little volume that gives you enough Plato without overwhelming you. For those of us who like our Plato in small doses, rather than in a fat trade paperback (i.e. Signet Classics) or big expensive tome of collected writings, this volume is wonderful. In our electronic world, there's little need to have all the writings of Plato in one hardcopy edition anyway, as one will easily find several free and inexpensive translations of his entire corpus in electronic formats online.

A great way to introduce philosophy.

Most philosophy books just present a stream of assertions and arguments that may of may not be organized into chapters. If you don't like reading what amount to court briefs, those books can be a pain to read.

This book is nothing like that.

The Dialogues are framed as Socrates's life story, complete with side characters, one-line-jokes, and dramatic tension. These things majorly elevate what would have been a dull slog through ancient Greek debates. You end up rooting for Socrates rather than just analyzing him. The final dialogue, in which he openly drops arguing in favor of simply stating his religious beliefs, is a little off, but the rest of the book is great. Easily the best I could expect out of a philosophy book.

This translation and presentation is excellent. It is amazing to read it again and see that Athens and the hypocrisy of thought then is very similar to that of our own society currently.

Although the specific details of my life may appear different from your own at the superficial level, beneath the surface I am just like you. I hope for meaning, health, and long life in safety and with enough resources for me and mine to endure in relative comfort.

I was raised in South Africa. Our family moved to the United States in 1990 to pursue the promise of America and the opportunities she embodies. I have degrees in chemistry and music, and a deep interest in and love for both the sciences and the arts. I believe no accurate understanding of the world can be attained without looking into many different areas of study, since the world contains them all, intermingled, interwoven, sometimes indistinguishable. I place my trust in logic and the scientific method because people, myself included, tend to stray from objectivity without too much provocation.

Politically, I aspire to be a passionate Centrist, though I sometimes fail — on some issues to the Left and on other issues to the Right. I have worked in the technology, internet, entertainment, and education sectors. My professional experience includes producing and directing film and television content, online branding and marketing, consulting for a 2008 U.S. Presidential campaign, and serial internet entrepreneurship. Nevertheless, I derive the greatest degree of satisfaction from my most organic callings — music, teaching (science) and writing.

While I may not claim expertise in any one area, I am just as astute a scholar of the human condition as anyone, since the only way we can know anyone else is by comparing what we see around us to how we know ourselves. And the one inescapable truth I see is that we humans are all the same... in the things that motivate our thoughts and actions, and in how they typically manifest in us and in our relationships.

An intesting book for individuals in all walks of life.

This is a remarkable analysis of our individual assets - biochemical, anatomical, empathetic, intellectual, social, and behavioral. The author, Arnie Benn, has drawn on his exposure to many aspects of life and people and interpreted it in a novel way. It is very readable and once started the reader becomes increasingly drawn into the logic of the book, making it hard to put down. As an MD, including a doctorate in science, I found Benn's concepts fascinating and very meaningful to myself but also to the general public. He has the knack to incorporate scientific principles into everyday experience and raise issues normally not considered in most books.

About the Author
JD Chandler is a writer and public historian living in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of Murder & Mayhem in Portland" and "Hidden History of Portland." His Slabtown Chronicles (PortlandCrime.blogspot.com) and Weird Portland (WeirdPortland.blogspot.com) blogs chronicle the Rose City's history. JB Fisher teaches writing at Portland Community College and came to the field of Portland crime history when he inadvertently discovered hidden above his water heater a stack of old Oregon Journal newspapers about a long-forgotten Oregon mystery. Fisher holds a doctorate in Renaissance English literature and was a Shakespeare professor before returning to the City of Roses where he is now researching and writing about some of Portland's most intriguing unsolved crime cases."

A Must Have for Portland Political History Buffs

I've read most of the commercial books on crime in Portland in the 20th century, partially because I grew up there in the 50s and due to family connections actually knew several of the players.

I'm giving the book four stars because while it contained tremendous detail and clearly involved extensive research, the writing and portrayl of certain minor characters and crimes was over detailed and highly confusing at times. Minor players were brought into a scenario without introductions and the reader rarely understood their role. The extraneous detail often thrown in without apparent purpose is my only negative, but strong enough to knock it down one star.

With that said, the book did contain some history of the part unions played in Oregon in the early to mid 20th century, and that was well done. Detailing the Portland Police Department corruption was nothing new in concept, but some new details and actors were presented. Very little emphasis on Big Jim Elkins and Al Winter, which was partially a disappointment but also somewhat of a relief as other books have covered them quite thoroughly. Still, they had so much control over Portland crime that they deserved more than a few mentions.

If you want a breezy rundown of Portland crime in the mid 20th century, Portland Confidential may be a better choice. My problem with that is the writing is VERY breezy with incomplete sentences and sometimes lacking in references, but an easy and entertaining read. Portland On The Take is almost the opposite in that it's highly detailed, overly so at times, but contains an impressive reference section. If you are more than casually interested in Portland history, both are strongly recommended.

A young Sioux woman tossing with fever on a cot; a father begging his wife for help; a mother standing uncertainly in her kitchen with a 12-gauge shotgun: from these fragments of memory, evoked by the narrator as the novel opens, Watson builds a simple but powerful tale. It is Montana in 1948, and young David Hayden's father, Wesley, is sheriff of their small town--a position he inherited from his domineering father. Wesley is overshadowed by his older brother, Frank, a war hero who is now the town doctor. When Marie, the Sioux woman who works for the Haydens, fall ill, she adamantly resists being examined by Frank. Some probing reveals that Frank has been molesting the Indian women in his care. Wesley's dilemma--should he turn in his own brother?--is intensified when Marie is found dead and David confesses that he saw his uncle near the house before she died. The moral issues, and the consequences of following one's conscience, are made painfully evident here. Watson is to be congratulated for the honesty of his writing and the purity of his prose. Highly recommended.

Watson (In a Dark Time, 1980), winner of the 1993 Milkweed National Fiction Prize, offers a lean, gaunt narrative rich with implication about a 12-year-old boy who witnesses the anguish of his sheriff father, who is forced to arrest his own brother for rape. David Hayden, now a history teacher, narrates the events of over 40 years ago, when his father, trained as a lawyer, was in his second term as sheriff of Bentrock, a small community of 2,000 close to the Canadian border. David's grandfather was also once a sheriff in a place where the land is harsh, the wind strong, and the sky endless. Meanwhile, David's Uncle Frank, a war hero, is a doctor, and the plot unfolds when Marie Little Soldier, the Haydens' housekeeper, falls sick. She screams when Uncle Frank treats her--then reveals that Frank has a reputation as a rapist of Indian women. David's father investigates and wrests from Frank a promise that he won't rape any more Indians. But then Marie dies unexpectedly, and David reveals information that leads his father to suspect that Frank had something to do with the death. He arrests Frank, but locks him in his own basement instead of in jail. The rest of Watson's story treats the consequences of that arrest: grandfather Hayden threatens his sheriff son, excusing the war hero uncle's sexual rapacity as normal instinct (``You know Frank's always been partial to red meat''); and Frank, after busting all the jelly and preserve jars in the basement where he's imprisoned, kills himself, whereupon the sheriff packs up his wife and son and moves away. A Really different kind of story....but very thought provoking

I was required to read this book for 9th grade class reading. After and while reading it we analyzed each important thing that happened, and through this I was able to see the brilliance in this small and simple book; the understated themes and moral questions that this little book brought up.

Set in the tiny fictional town of Bentrock Montana, this story follows the life of David, a twelve year old boy, and his family living there. His father, Wesley, is the town's sherif, and his family, the Haydens', has held power in the town for a long time, almost like a clan. His Uncle is a respected war hero and doctor, well liked by everyone; charming, charismatic, and funny. Indians also live there, and one, a young woman named Marie, works for Wesley, his wife Gail, and their son David, who loves her. Everything seems good and simple and nice, with the worst crimes in the town being a couple of drunks occasionally getting into a bar fight.

But then, Marie gets sick. And she tells Gail something that will forever change the family - Frank has molested her and raped countless other Indian women. Wesley is forced to choose between his family and what's right.

This book is short and simply written, but conveys a lot of meaning within it. It's a different book than most - dark but bright, friendly but icy and cold. It plunges you headfirst into an intense storyline.

Stunning story full of shocks and surprises....

In the hands of the very skillful story teller, Larry Watson, this novel shines the light on the justice and morality of a small western town at a time when many people chose to look the other way at certain social injustices.

David Hayden narrates this stunning story as an adult recalling the events as he remembers them when he was twelve years old. His narrative is crisp with all of the openess and clarity characteristic of an observant young man, but seasoned with age,

He tells us at the beginning of the novel......"From the summer of my twelfth year I carry a series of images more vivid and lasting that any others of my boyhood and indelible beyond all attempts the years make to erase or fade them..."

And from there, we enter the town of Bentrock, Montana, where we are slowly and lucidly made aware of the horrific abuse of power taking place and are unable to look away from the unconsciable and abhorrent events that are unfolding.

It was both distressing and compelling to read such a heart-wrenching book that took place in the notorious lawlessness of the fabled 'Wild West'

Perhaps the legendary Old West might have, in reality, been a far more civilized and secure place than the America of today.

Justice in 'them good ole days' was often served up rather quickly and often with a sense of moral integrity.

Larry Watson very discerningly crafts a disturbing, yet touching story, a story that is at once both highly believable and shockingly unbelievable!

America loves it's heroes, it's prodigal sons, the godliness of it's doctors......those men of power that seem to be above reproach. Unfortunately, there are always 'bad apples' in the best of the bunch and we find one here.

In 1948, the Indian woman was not given a fair place in her society and was thus a easy victim for an abuser. Even today, more native Indian are raped than any of the other American ethnic groups. I found the following information on-line to be ghastly and abominable.......

"Colonizers have long tried to crush the spirit of the Indian peoples and blunt their will to resist colonization. One of the most devastating weapons of conquest has been sexual violence. In the eyes of colonizers, Indian bodies are inherently "dirty." White Californians of the 1860s called Native people "the dirtiest lot of human beings on earth." Violence done to "dirty" or "impure" bodies simply does not count"

As Montana 1948 unfolds and the truth becomes evident, justice seeks to prevail.

However, a few unexpected twists and turns at the end add a surprising punch to this very well written family and societal drama.

As Cormac McCarthy's Sheriff Bell in No Country for Old Men opines at the end of his book when a reporter questions him about how crime has gotten so out of hand.

Sheriff Bell responds......"It starts when you begin to overlook bad manners. Any time you quit hearin 'Sir and Mam' the end is pretty much in sight. I told her........you finally get into the sort of breakdown in mercantile ethics that leaves people settin around out in the desert dead in their vehicles and by then it's just too late."

Seems to me that Sheriff Hayden, like Sheriff Bell understood the changes that were taking place all too well with his final fervent remark as he slammed his hand down on the dinner table so hard that the plates and silverware jumped:

"Don't blame Montana." he thundered. " Don't ever blame Montana!"

Great read!

I'm not much for reviews, but I really enjoyed this book and had trouble putting it down. Watson does such a great job describing the characters and making you feel like you're an invisible observer as events unfold. It's almost like you already know the characters.

I remember several times in the story I would read a sentence or two and those would be followed by another "extra sentence" almost that seemed so perfectly placed. This "extra sentence" conveyed so much emotion and went a step further than I believe most authors would have gone. It's as if Watson adds this extra sentence and you think to yourself after reading it, "you know, I would feel the same way if I was in this situation," but you would've never thought of it on your own if he hadn't taken the time and effort to craft such a thought. Watson makes the effort to capture every moment and ensures the reader can grasp the emotion.

I felt really connected to this book and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. However, I think anyone can appreciate a story written with such characterization and emotion. Watson doesn't waste time fluffing it up to make it some overdone masterpiece of American literature. Sometimes less is more and that's what makes this book so outstanding!

They fall in love but one day Kass disappears

Laney and Kass meet as teenagers. They fall in love but one day Kass disappears. Laney is shattered. But life goes on. Laney goes off to college and it's there that she runs into Kass again. Laney wantes answers. Why did he leave? Why didn't he ever come looking for her? What happpened to his parents? Kass doesn't have the answers Lanet is seeking. He has ascended. His memories are spotty. He has no idea where his parents are. All he knows is that he has to win Laney back, even if she is just an assignment.

The Ascension of Laney is about good and evil. Laney is an Ascent but she has no idea. Kass is there to train her once she comes into her powers. But in order to do that an innocent has to die by her hands. The Ascent are a lower form of angels. They get their assignments and orders from the Archangels. One rule is that you cannot be with a human. Otherwise, you fall. You lose your wings. The Archs aren't the only angels waiting for Laney to come into her powers. The Fallen are too. Laney is a powerful Ascent, only she doesn't know it. Yet.

This was a really good book. Kass and Owen make a funny team. Laney is an enjoyable lead character. She isn't the typical whimpering female lead. She is a take charge kind of gal. The story flows really well. There is no lag at all. A great mix of paranormal, adventure, fantasy, action and romance. Definitely a must read. I am really looking forward to the next part of Laney's story.

Kass and Laney had an epic kind of love and he vanishes

Kris Hack takes you right into the world of Angels with the Ascension of Laney, and doesn’t let you leave until the last page. Her characters are well developed and intriguing.

Kass and Laney had an epic kind of love and he vanishes, like off the face of the Earth. Laney is heartbroken, just as any teenaged girl would be. She still holds a grudge for that heartbreak five years later.

This book will keep you on your toes and your pages turning! Kris Hack makes you fall in love with an angel! I really enjoyed this book and normally I don’t read paranormal romance.

Firstly, let me say I really enjoyed this book.
It's one of the better ones I've read recently.
I'm a little late coming into this series as I know Kris Hack has recently released the third book and she's well on her way to writing the fourth. Happily I have the second and third books and you can be sure I'll be moving onto them A.S.A.P.
To be honest it wasn't super exciting or dramatic but in my opinion Kris Hack has done all the right things, ticked all the right boxes for a first book. It was more an easy slow burn of building up to the next book. A great introduction to the four main characters, Laney, Kass, Miguel and Ryan, who I just know you will grow to love. It was an easy read and it kept me interested and invested the whole way. I loved the supernatural concept and am looking forward to being fully immersed into their changed lives in the next book, The Fall of Kass. Not giving any spoilers away. Just go read it!
