The Undisputed Greatest Writer of All Time, by Beau Sia

Still recovering from post concussion syndrome, The Undisputed Greatest Writer of All Time, was written as a test of his cognitive function, with the express desire to nurture his friendship with Derrick Brown. Driven by the unguaranteed nature of life, this collection of poetry bursts with urgency to understand, hunger to explore beyond one's comfort zone, and attacks the aspects that too often prevent us from having a full life. The first book of poetry by Beau Sia in over 13 years, this work is the reflection of the child no longer at the mercy of his childishness. A boy who will not break his father to be a man. A poet whose words are iceberg.

Toward the Genuine
By Larry G. Bierman
When I first met Beau back in the mid 1990s he was in his late teens and reading at Paul Medina's coffee house on the Paseo in Oklahoma City. He was a star in his ability to entertain. Though some of the other local poets were put off by his hyperbolic self image, his audacity and his sharp wit always thrilled me.The one thing that was totally obvious at the time was how serious he was about becoming a poet. My advice to him was (and even though things have improved here, would still be) get out of Oklahoma as fast as you can--go to New York.

He started his film studies at NYU, became an instant favorite at the Nuyrorkian, made friends with Allen Ginsberg, and acted in his first movie (Slam). He was a cast member of Def Jam on Broadway and toured for several years. While I consider him a friend, he was busy, I was much older, in Oklahoma, and so we have never corresponded. I think I can objectively say his newest book "The Undisputed Greatest Write of All Time" is a wonderful accomplishment. His first book in fifteen years, he has gained depth and wisdom without losing his audacity. Marianne Moore wrote about poetry that:

"if you demand on the one hand,
the raw material of poetry in
all its rawness and
that which is on the other hand
genuine, you are interested in poetry."

This bit of verse by Ms Moore perfectly describes why I am "interested" in Beau Sia--he is both raw and completely genuine. His newest poems are very personal. . . because life is personal. I love this book and I love his publisher, Write Bloody Books. Beau's book will fill several slots on my Christmas list. I wish him and all a Happy New Year.
Yours ever, Larry.

Awesome!
By teri t.
Honest, reflective and unapologetic, Beau Sia pushes towards an evolution more humane and more infinite, illuminating connections past, present, future, within a nonlinear relative continuum. Sometimes funny and always personal, Beau displays unmatched dexterity with unexpected and provocative strokes. This is a valuable work by an impeccable craftsman. Decipher the code, and commence teleportation.

DOPE
By D L Youngblood
This book is indeed a work of art. Compelling to the fact of just wanting to throw because it was so good. The poems in the book are so real and touching to your heart its an actual person. There are many dope parts of this book that make up this wonderful man. Beau Sia out did himself this time.

Review
Literotica.com is one of the most popular and diverse sites presenting fiction by thousands of different authors. It allows writer and audience to interact pretty much free of interferences. Hark! That sound you hear is the shattering of taboos. This book collects some of the best offerings from Literotica.com and puts them into a format you can read in the bathtub, or in bed, or ... wherever. You'll find stories like Two Bags for the Bride, by Dirty Old Man, which explains why looks aren t everything. Then there's the ominously titled Still Life With Teeth, by Patricia Day, which is all about eating (enough said). A Fireman's Prayer, by Dixon Carter Lee gives a whole new meaning to the idea of burning passion....

You'll probably want to read this book one-handed.

Above average internet erotica
By TammyJo Eckhart
I don't mean to belittle anyone who writes erotica or anything for the masses of the Internet to consume. That takes courage. As with most mass project though, as with most anthologies of published material, there will be winners and losers among the number of stories. Of the 11 stories here, voted on as most popular on the site and one written just for this collection by Dixon Carter Lee, I can say that 6 of them were above the average of what I've seen online and the rest were ok for both online and published fiction. Nothing was horrible, trust me, I've read or attempted to read some truly horrible fiction online.

My favorite is Patricia Day's "Still Life With Teeth" that examines eating disorders and their damage to sexual relationships. It's harsh, intense, and sadly very realistic of how someone with an eating disorder might look at the world.

Mike Tauron's very short "Lunch with Rita" tackles the issue of age and prostitute in a unique way. "Indigo" from Julie Lemolo is sexy without explicit sex and I love when a story can pull that off so well in so few pages.

"A Fireman's Prayer" by Dixon Carter Lee is a modern romance while Anessa Ramsey's "The Games We Play" is a nice historical romance -- both authors should move to the romance gender and make excellent money.

Maggie Redux's "Whiff" also tackles difficult subjects again age but also racism in a positive fashion. Nicolas Travers offers us a glimpse into a very sad man's life in the first two chapters of "Vast".

The other stories just seemed to lack a strong focus on characters or perhaps they were just not my sort of thing though I'd say most of the stories here are honestly "not my sort of thing". Perhaps they might be yours.

For a collection of 11 stories this as good as many anthologies I've read and it's nice to see folks brave enough to open their minds up to the world online getting a little time in book form.

Well written and erotic
By paul tippetts
I enjoyed this book. I admit to being a long term contributor to Literotica as PAUL C.
Not all the subject matter was necessarily to my taste but all the stories are very well crafted and well written.
To regular visitors to such sites as Literotica some of the stories may be over long and the sex scenes not as explicit as they would be used to. That said, if it is an erotic read you are looking for rather than porn then this is probably as good as any you will find.

Visible Gods, by Douglas Edison Harding

Visible Gods is an imaginary dialogue between Socrates and four fictitious modern-day characters. Socrates' worldview is of a living cosmos with man only half-way up the hierarchy of all beings; above him reign suprahuman beings of great majesty and power - the visible gods. The moderns with whom Socrates converses disdain his ancient Greek cosmos as primitive and false. Yet as Socrates questions them in typically ironic fashion about the discoveries of science, it's not at all clear that the scientists' view of "a dead universe populated here and there with rare accidents of life" is right. Indeed, the more the moderns argue their case, the more Socrates shows they are arguing his... Douglas Harding completed Visible Gods in 1955. But the 'living universe' does not go out of date! Join this conversation and discover - rediscover - the brilliant, shining, truly majestic life that is within you and without you. Put aside modern preconceptions and see the world with fresh, innocent, truthful eyes, and be amazed!

Treat For Harding Fans
By Bill Statton
This short book, really more of an essay or a long article, will delight fans of Douglas Harding and his profound and sometimes difficult major work--"The Hierarchy of Heaven And Earth". Many ideas discussed in the Hierarchy book reappear here in an engaging, easier-to-read follow up work which consists of a dialogue among Socrates and four moderns--two scientists, one psychologist, and a theologian. Here you'll find many fascinating ideas to ponder about our identity in (and with) the world and their implications for viewing life with value and meaning, and living a life open to its Source. Written in 1955, a few years after the Hierarchy book, "Visible Gods" is here published for the first time,

The Visible World
By Flatlander
An amazing book by Mr. Harding!!! I have been a fan and reader for years, and my only regret is that this book is unavailable as a hard copy. Reading the electronic version is a chore predicated upon the availability of technical devices and support. I find a book, with paper and print, far superior. Despite that, the content is extraordinary. If you don't see the world differently after reading this material, you aren't really looking..

The Hanging of Angelique: The Untold Story of Canadian Slavery and the Burning of Old Montreal (Race in the Atlantic World, 1700-1900)By

During the night of April 10, 1734, Montral burned. Marie-Joseph Anglique, a twenty-nine-year-old slave, was arrested, tried, and found guilty of starting the blaze that consumed forty-six buildings. Suspecting that she had not acted alone and angered that she had maintained her innocence, Anglique's condemners tortured her after the trial. She confessed but named no accomplices. Before Anglique was hanged, she was paraded through the city. Afterward, her corpse was burned. Anglique, who had been born in Portugal, faded into the shadows of Canadian history, vaguely remembered as the alleged arsonist behind an early catastrophic fire.

The result of fifteen years of research, The Hanging of Anglique vividly tells the story of this strong-willed woman. Afua Cooper draws on extensive trial records that offer, in Anglique's own words, a detailed portrait of her life and a sense of what slavery was like in Canada at the time. Predating other first-person accounts by more than forty years, these records constitute what is arguably the oldest slave narrative in the New World.

Cooper sheds new light on the largely misunderstood or ignored history of slavery in Canada. She refutes the myth that Canada was a haven at the end of the Underground Railroad. Cooper also provides a context for Canada in the larger picture of transatlantic slavery while re-creating the tragic life of one woman who refused to accept bondage.

Review

Cooper connects Anglique’s fate with the wide world of Atlantic, American, and Canadian slavery, and with the intimate world of the household where Anglique worked. An enthralling and important tale.

(Natalie Zemon Davis author of The Return of Martin Guerre)

As rigorous scholarly research, Cooper examines trial transcripts, private letters, and other New World correspondence to produce an academic coup. Her book offers a new perspective on Canadian slavery, altering the image of ourselves as benign: 'Slavery was as Canadian as it was American or West Indian.' As a dramatic re-telling of one slave woman's life of oppression, The Hanging of Anglique reaffirms and extends the feminist slogan that the personal is political. . . . [Told] in the decisive language of an historian and with a sense of urgency befitting a poet.

(Montreal Review of Books)

[Cooper] convincingly demonstrates that one woman's story can represent larger global forces. The account of Anglique's trial is an important source for Canadian history and the history of the African diaspora.

(Toronto Globe and Mail)

An evocative, thought-provoking and profoundly accessible work . . . [the] story leads onto the vista of Canada's participation in a huge, often chaotic Atlantic world order and a wider story of African migrations and diaspora.

(Calgary Herald)

Cooper is to be congratulated for long, careful and thoroughly engaged research and passionate, engaging writing.

(Michel Basilieres author of Black Bird)

The most important piece of Canadian history written in decades, Afua Cooper's The Hanging of Angelique shakes the earth beneath the Canadian nation story. Thorough, original, and masterful, this book is s stunning reclamation of one woman's life, but it is also a reclamation of Africans in early North American history. Trenchant and engagingly written, this book is brilliant.

(Dionne Brand author of What We All Long For)

[Cooper] presents us with an enormous range of scholarly research and heartfelt interpretation to explain, contextualize and condemn the slave-owning society of New France, the New World, and Europe. . . . This book is essential. It has the scope of a great historical novel, traversing oceans and cultures, full of sex, romance, betrayal, escapes, sufferings, crimes and tragedies. Cooper's passionate voice punches through dry detail with evident outrage. . . . The Hanging of Anglique really is an important and original work.

(Michel Basilieres Toronto Star)

Cooper's passionate style reflects her commitment to shake Canadians from their complacency about their past.

(Winnipeg Free Press)

SHE HAS ARISEN
By Paula C. Aird
A case had been built against Marie-Joseph Angelique based on innuendo, insinuation, hearsay and Angelique's bad reputation.Under severe torture, the 29-year-old woman, who previously proclaimed her innocence admitted to setting fire to the home of her owner. This fire consumed 46 buildings in Old Montreal. After the grisly execution Angelique's corpse was left hanging for two hours for all to see, then was burnt. That should have been the end of Angelique but 270 years later she has arisen. Thanks to Afua Cooper.
In fact through her thorough research Ms Cooper delves into much of the historical occurences of the time. She puts to rest that myth that there was no slavery in Canada. She opens wide the doors of an unjust justice system.
This is not just Black history but Canadian - even world history. It should be required reading for all students of history.

not history. specualtion with an agenda
By B. Poirier
this is not a book of history. it is a book of historical speculation wherein cooper indulges her racist and disturbing "post colonial" fantasies of white murder through her main character

consider:

- she claims canada is racist because there is no statue of angelique in the very city, montreal, which she burnt to the ground. angelique was a terrorists, who destroyed the only church and hospital in the city and the homes of thousands of innocent hard working people, and cooper wants her to have a statue?

- she claims the canadian judicial system was biased against angelique, even though she agrees, ultimately, that angelique is guilty. cooper wants to have it both ways: she wants to paint angelique as the victim of a criminal injustice AND as a proactive and willing agent who struck a blow for all oppressed people with her defiant and violent revolutionary act. she wants angelique to be a blameless heroine, to better serve her agenda that all slave narratives are inherently about courageous blacks fighting injustice, when really this is about a cowerdly liar who committed a sin just as bad as slavery. in order to justify her crime, cooper speculates about how hard life was for angelique (though all evidence points to the contrary)

- she also wants to paint HER angelique as an independent minded women who was beholded to none, and yet angelique was, ironically, completely dependent on a white man (her lover) for her escape and its planning, and who cowardly lied about the crime she committed.

- she claims angelique's lover cowardly "betrayed and abandoned her" when she was arrested for burning the town and faced execution himself (ie whitey got scarred and ran away). but what was he supposed to do? if the roles were reversed she would easily have justified angelique's "betrayal"

- she claims canadian historians who see the tragedy of angelique as a love story (she burnt the city to flee canada with white lover) as racist and sexist for not crediting angelique with cooper's biased and preferred narrative of revenge against an evil society (even though angelique never ran away and started playing with fire until she met her white lover, and there is no evidence montreal was an "evil white society" - quite the contrary, actually)

- she details the atlantic slave trade but make NO mention of the complicity of africans themselves in said trade. the one sentence mentioning the complicity of africa is dismissed because "all whites hold institutional power over all blacks" (the kind of unsophisticated nonsense you get from an undergraduate course on colonialism)

- she borders on antisemitism by going out of her way to exaggerate the role that jews played in the slave trade, while making NO mention of the role of muslims in the trade (she has only good things to say about islam in this book, as she is herself a muslim, and has nothing good to say about judaism or christianity, the latter of which she sees as nothing but a tool of oppression (islam still has slavery, christianity and christians abolished it)

- she borders on french racism, calling all french canadians dirty and filthy. she seems to revel in passages by anelique and her lover about how much they despise the french and want to murder them

- her worst sin in this book is of consistently accusing angelique's montreal master of raping her though there is NO evidence for this at all. this is absolutely unacceptable for a professional historian to do. it is often couched in "did he rape her? we dont know, so we'll have to assume he did. i mean, white people raped slaves all the time so why not this guy?". unbelievable. she repeats this over and over in her book hoping if she repeats this PURE SPECULATION enough people will believe this man, who angelique says treated her well, raped her

- this book is riddled with speculation and contains NO original research. and yet she claims anglique has been ignored by canadian history, which is written by racist whites, while ALL of her info is culled from secondary canadian sources. and what research the book contains is scant - she basically quotes from ONE book, by trudel (who, by the way, she accuses of being racist and sexist and yet thanks in the afterword for his kind help.)

- she paints a very misleading picture of slavery in canada. she says slavery was in canada for FOUR centuries and yet later in the book she says the first slave came to canada in 1691 and later says that slavery was completely abolished in canada in 1837. you do the math.

- she says slavery was every where in canada, that it was systemic, and yet she NEVER gives us the actual number of slaves in canada (it was about 1300 in total, ever). in her footnotes she mentions censuses done that counted the slaves BUT NEVER tells us how many. why? because she knows that her whole book is based on her own lie - the slavery was everywhere in canada, when in reality it was very, very small and much, much different that in the US and latin/south america.

- she says artisans owned slaves, yet never once give the name of a single artisan who owned a slave. the only canadian slaveholders we are told of in this book are all part of the french aristocracy (who all left canada for france after british conquest). a few very wealthy merchants are mentioned (though they treat their one slave just like their other indentured servants), but they were also part of the elite. she claims slavery was not the monopoly of the elite, yet gives ONLY examples of elites (maybe 15 slave owners in all are mentioned in her book, out of a population of tens of thousands)

- she makes NO differentiation between the slavery in canada and slavery in the south; she says all slavery is equally bad. YET, consider that angelique was allowed to run away several times without ever being punished and she was allowed to carry on multiple love affairs with white men in the open. she would have been killed or worse if she was in the southern states or jamaica. the slavery in canada was very mild compared to the slavery in the south. slaves were baptized and thus considered fully human, had access to the courts (could sue for their freedom), could give testimony in court, etc - all rights no one in the US had. and angelique had her sentence, for BURNING AN ENTIRE CITY FULL OF HARD WORKING BORDERLINE POOR PEOPLE reduced from having her hand cut off and being burned at the stake to hanging only. this seems like charitable restraint

- cooper wants to paint canada as just as racist as the south of the US but her own facts, or lack thereof, do not support her own racist assumptions.

- she paints all whites as the same (inherently racist) and all blacks the same (consider her SPECUALATION about angelique's black hangman - "was he thinking how evil white people are for making him kill one of his own? probably")

- fact is that the lives of slaves in canada were no different than indentured servants. life was hard and undignified for over 95% of all people in the 17th and 18th century. yet she wants to make angelique a myrter because she was a cook and a maid, who had other cooks and maids helping her.

this book is what is wrong with the post-colonial, identity theory cultural relativism that is sullying the discipline of history. do facts no longer matter?

and let me add that for a "spoken word artist" (whatever that is), this book is poorly written. there is so much repetition and filler in this book, which at 300 pages could easily have come in at 85 without losing anything.

Baby Brother's Blues: A Novel, by Pearl Cleage

When Regina Burns married Blue Hamilton, she knew he was no ordinary man. A charismatic R&B singer who gave up his career to assume responsibility for the safety of Atlanta’s West End community, Blue had created an African American urban oasis where crime and violence were virtually nonexistent. In the beginning, Regina enjoyed a circle of engaging friends and her own work as a freelance communications consultant. Most of all, she relished the company of her husband, who never ceased to be a source of passion and delight.

Then everything changed. More and more frightened women were showing up in West End, seeking Blue’s protection from lovers who had suddenly become violent. When the worst offenders begin to disappear without a trace, the signs–all of them grim–seem to point toward Blue and his longtime associate, Joseph “General” Richardson. Now that Regina is pregnant, her fear for Blue’s safety has become an obsession that threatens the very heart of their relationship.

At the same time, Regina’s friend Aretha Hargrove is desperately trying to redefine her own marriage. Aretha’s husband, Kwame, is lobbying for them to leave West End and move to midtown. Aretha resists at first, but finally agrees in an effort to rekindle the flame that first brought them together.

Regina and Aretha have no way of knowing that what they regard as their private struggles will soon become very public. When Baby Brother, a charming con man, insinuates himself into the community, it becomes clear that there is more to his handsome faade than meets the eye. He carries the seeds of change that will affect both women in profound and startling ways.

Returning to the vividly rendered Atlanta district of her last two novels, New York Times bestselling author Pearl Cleage brilliantly weaves the threads of her characters’ intersecting lives into a story of family, friendship and, of course, love. Baby Brother’s Blues is full of wit and warmth, illumination the core of every woman’s hopes and dreams.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of this scorching morality tale from Cleage (Babylon Sisters), Wesley "Baby Brother" Jamerson, a soldier reluctantly serving in Iraq, is on a five-day emergency leave in Washington, D.C., because his mother has died. But Wes, who "had made an art form of avoiding responsibility," has no plans to attend his mother's funeral. Nor does he intend to return to his unit in Iraq. A failed attempt to visit his older sister, Cassie, to whom he's shown little gratitude despite all her efforts to help him, leads to a lecture from his judge brother-in-law: "You youngbloods think the world owes you a living, and for what? You're mad at your mamas, mad at your daddies, mad at the women foolish enough to have your children. Always crying the blues." It's downhill for the self-destructive Wes from there. Cleage manages to end on a note of uplift, but an overly complex plot and a surfeit of underdeveloped supporting characters diminish the impact of this novel of infidelity and greed.

Review
Praise for Pearl Cleage and Babylon Sisters

“Pearl Cleage’s wonderful new novel, Babylon Sisters, shows a writer at the top of her game, managing to weave together the eternal dance of mothers and daughters, a timeless love story, rich friendships, and international politics into a fast-paced Atlanta saga with an unforgettable villain and a thrilling climax that leaves us cheering. Cleage has once again given us a book filled with folks who are so real we think we know them, or wish we did.”
–E. Lynn Harris, author of A Love of My Own

“Babylon Sisters’ funny, feminine, fabulous voice sings a story of history, family, love and redemption. Cleage’s ability to make the personal political and the political personal triumphs once again! Nestled in this beautifully written ode to love–of child, friends, men, and self–is a call to political activism and empowerment.”
–Jill Nelson, author of Sexual Healing

“Cleage writes with amazing grace and [a] killer instinct.”
–The New York Times

“A perfect blend of love and activism . . . [Cleage’s] characters struggle with issues of conscience and consequence, and readers are always richer in the end.”
–The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Trouble Comes to Paradise...
By Mocha Girl
Pearl Cleage returns to the West End of Atlanta, the crime-free utopia where ex-crooner Blue Hamilton and trusty sidekick, General Richardson, keep the peace ala "Godfather" vigilante style. Fans were first introduced to Blue, his wife, Regina, and other West End residents in Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do and Babylon Sisters.

In Baby Brother's Blues, we meet Wes Jamerson aka Baby Brother, an Army deserter who breezes into the West End in a stolen car in search of Zora, an anti-war coed he met a few days earlier. Trouble rides in his wake and it does not take long for Baby Brother to land a job with Blue Hamilton despite General's urging otherwise.

Cleage continues to dabble in the supernatural by mentioning a bit more of Blue's mysterious past lives and continues Aunt Abbie's prophetic visions. This time, she delves even deeper into the spiritual realm with the suggestion of the reincarnation of General's deceased lover in the unlikely form of an uncouth exotic dancer named Brandi (with an "i" because it sounds classier) who is nearly half his age. The plot thickens when unbeknownst to General, Baby Brother and Brandi connect at a primal level and things turn downright deadly when Baby Brother's hustle for extra income allows him to stumble across a marriage and career ending secret for a close member of Blue's family. The blues invades the Hamilton household when Blue's late night excursions to "handle business" begin to take its toll on his pregnant wife, and the blues take root when one solitary impulsive act upsets a lifelong bond between key characters.

As in her other novels, the author's ardent trademark themes of pro-family, pro-community, friendship, loyalty, and sisterhood ring with resounding clarity and instant recognition. Cleage weaves an intricate multi-layered plot that folds current events into the story (increased domestic violence among war veterans and a sprinkling of political and police corruption). Strong, familiar, and beloved characters (Blue, Aunt Abbie, Regina) return but their storylines come across merely as afterthoughts amid the crux of the story that focuses more on the antics of several new yet forgettable and underdeveloped characters (Lee, Teddy, Zora, Brandi, Bob, Kwame, Wes) and their ill effects on the West End community. The pacing was slow and deliberate from the beginning through about two-thirds of the novel but rushed and somewhat abrupt near the end. The "action" was too little and came too late in the story and the tidy summarized subplot conclusions left a lot to the imagination.

Despite my misgivings, I still consider myself a fan of the author - I love her work - her novels typically contain positive, uplifting messages and heartfelt lessons. Baby Brother's Blues is a well-written and well constructed novel that will no doubt provide much fodder for in depth discussions among reading groups and book clubs because there are some enlightening, thought-provoking elements and a few memorable quotes within the pages. However, it still basically rounds out as just a notch above an average offering for me, hence the 3.5-star rating.

Pearl Cleage Is a Fine Writer Who Keeps Getting Better
By Tayari Jones
I just finished Baby Brother's Blues, Pearl Cleage's new novel, which will be released at the end of next month. The copy I have is an early copy from the publisher-no images on the cover, not a hint of what to expect. The blurb on the back said that it was a continuation of the story of Regina and Blue, the lovers from Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do. However, this is not a sequel. While Pearl's earlier novels can be loosely classified as "contemporary romances"-though I call them "Trojan Horse Romances", owing to the political messages she slips in- Baby Brother's Blues is more of a noir thriller. Maybe she has made a new genre, "Trojan Horse Thriller."

You don't have to read many pages to know that you are reading something very different than what Pearl usually writes. For one thing, it is in the third-person point of view, and the opening character is a man: Baby Brother, the title character. But I wouldn't say that he is the main character. As crazy as this may sound, this is a book that doesn't really have a main character. Instead, this is a novel about a community. General wisdom says that the protagonist is the character to whom the story happens. Well, the events in this powerful and serious novel don't happen to any one person. The community, the city, the neighborhood, Atlanta's West End-this is the main character.

The novel's cast includes Blue Hamilton, the self-appointed Emperor of the West End, his right-hand man General, and General's lover Brandi (who works as a stripper at Montre's). Precious Hargrove, the righteous sister-politician is back, along with her son Kwame who has a terrible secret. Baby Brother, a Iraq War deserter with a rap sheet and bad attitude, is our guide through an underground world of down-low brothers and other parts of Atlanta that most people don't talk about. While most of the characters live in the West End which has been made safe by Blue Hamilton's rule, this book is extremely gritty. There are crooked cops and strange bedfellows, betrayal and revenge, murder and suicide. The violence is not for the faint-hearted, but it is though Pearl is saying, "It hurts you to read about it, but there are people LIVING this life!"

Usually, when I get one of Pearl's books in the mail, I make some tea, grab some animal crackers and gobble it up in a single sitting. But this is a book that makes you slow down and take your time. You have to ponder it, read every word, because it's not a story that goes where you think it's going. The characters are many, but fully drawn and haunting. The choices they make aren't easy and the consequences are not always pretty.

But even through the ugliness and corruption, Pearl Cleage's optimism still shines through. As always, she writes with a big heart and gives the reader hope that self-love, black-on-black love is what we need if we are going to make it through these terrible times. Regina and Blue are expecting a baby and you feel like their love that has endured lifetimes will be here for a few more. And of course, we have our own Pearl, who tells it like it is, unflinching but tender with a compassion and honesty that always reminds us that the power is ours.

BABY BROTHER'S BLUES by Pearl Cleage

March 5, 2006

Amazon Rating: 4/5 stars

Where two worlds collide in an Atlanta neighborhood, a man named Blue Hamilton "imposes" his rules to keep the peace among his people, but outer forces seem to be tearing the neighborhood apart. This is one of the themes in BABY BROTHER'S BLUES, the latest by Pearl Cleage, known best for her Oprah pick WHAT LOOKS CRAZY ON AN ORDINARY DAY. In this latest venture, Blue and his family and friends are part of the focus of the story, but when Baby Brother enters the picture, some lives are disrupted and tragedy is one of the results.

With a number of charismatic characters that fill these pages, I enjoyed the story that followed Blue, his wife and unborn child. Baby Brother, the negative element, is on leave from Iraq and has no intention of going back, and his presence in Blue's neighborhood, The West End (in Atlanta) causes tragedy among a number of people that are part of Blue's life. Namely, General Richardson, Blue's right hand man, finds himself inadvertently caught up in the world of one woman, Brandi, who he thinks is a sign from his deceased lover, Juanita, who also happened to be Blue's mother. And, Kwame Hargrove, the son of a prominent Atlanta politician, has a secret that could ruin his mother's career and his own.

BABY BROTHER'S BLUES is an intricate weaving of stories that are entwined together and end up back to Blue Hamilton. With a full cast of characters, not everyone has a happy ending, but that is what I liked about this book. This is not a Hollywood-happy ending type of book. It felt real and that is what kept me reading. I am definitely a fan of Pearl Cleage now, and look forward to reading the read more by her.
