Ever wonder what it was like to travel by Stage Coach, Canal Packet, River Boat, Horse drawn street cars or Pullman Palace Cars in 19th Century America? Even if you haven't, there is now a wonderful, highly readable account, often humorous, in Wet Britches and Muddy Boots by John H. White, Jr. Subtitled A History of Travel in Victorian America, John has compiled a veritable encyclopedia of machines, methods and inventors, as well as, the flavor of every day encounters with every known form of transport from the close of the Revolution to the close of the Gilded Age. John is known to most people as the Curator Emeritus of Transportation at the Smithsonian, in those years he produced the now standard works on the development of the steam locomotive, freight and passenger cars. This new volume is no less complete and will become another "go-to" standard resource. This is John's 14th book and the culmination of a life devoted to research, writing and teaching. Fourteen chapters, 512 pages, with extensive illustrations, usually from period popular accounts, suggestions for further study and an index. The Appendix, Travel Words and Tales, is a delightful account of word origins and changing meanings of common terms and phrases where John's wry humor often sparkles through. The last three chapters, regarding emigrant travel, passenger trains: coach class and first class rail travel will probably interest most rail oriented readers. I suspect John saved these chapters for last, as he, obviously enjoyed the telling. Every chapter, in any order, constitute a well spent and informative read. Journey with this book soon!

More than trivia, an entertaining and memorable read

I have been looking forward to this book. I've always had an unexplored interest in steam era railroad history and I came across the authors' previous works when I started exploring the topic. He is a good writer. I don't know why this should surprise me since he was a Smithsonian curator. He has the ability to take what some would consider a boring or trivial topic and not only make it interesting but memorable and entertaining. Unfortunately not many people are going to hear of this book, much less bother to crack it open to read it, but those that do will be rewarded. One could be confused that this is a part of the 'Railroads Past and Present' series; the scholarship is more in line with the 'Oxford History of the United Staes' series. Read the Kindle preview, if you like it buy it. It is the sort of book that I will keep going back to, not so much for details, but to remind myself that our ancestors were not unlike ourselves. Mr. White, thank you.

John White has done a terrific job covering all the bases, when it comes to early transportation modes. I bought it because of his chapter on canals.
