About the Author
Dr. Kenneth E. Clow is a professor of Marketing in the College of Business Administration at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Previously, he served as the Dean for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and as the MBA Director at Pittsburg State University. He obtained his PhD from the University of Arkansas in 1992. Dr. Clow has published over 220 articles in academic journals and proceedings and has written a number of books, including Integrated Advertising, Promotions, and Marketing Communications, 6th edition, Essentials of Marketing, 4th edition, Sports Marketing, and Marketing Management. His articles appear in journals such as Journal of Business Research, The Journal of Marketing Management, the Journal of Services Marketing, the Journal of Contemporary Business Issues, the Journal of Restaurant and Foodservices Marketing, Journal of Professional Services Marketing, Services Marketing Quarterly and The Journal of Hospitality and Leisure Marketing.

Donald Baack holds the rank of University Professor of management at Pittsburg (Kansas) State University, where he has taught since 1988. He previously held positions at Southwest Missouri State University, Missouri Southern State College, and Dana College. Baack received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska in 1987. His primary area of study was Organization and Management Theory.

Professor Baack is a Consulting Editor for the "Journal of Managerial Issues" and has published in the journal. Clow). Clow and Baack also wrote the "Concise Encyclopedia of Advertising" (Haworth). Baack and his son Daniel W. Baack recently prepared a series of 10 modules entitled "Ethics Across the Curriculum" for Pearson Custom Publishing. He also published three popular press books in the area of romance/self help.

Baack has been active in the Southwest Academy of Management for many years, serving as its President in 1996. He was nominated for SWAM's Distinguished Educator award in 2007 and 2008. He is married (Pamela) with three children.

Lots of typos

I purchased this book for a class and the content itself is good; however, the number of spelling errors is unacceptable. This is a marketing book, which means the bar should be pretty high on content quality; not to mention it is not a cheap book. Not sure anyone proofread it before publishing!

Embarrassingly Amateurish

The world certainly doesn't need another marketing book. And certainly doesn't need this one. It was painful to use in a class. Here are two examples from the book:

(P. 65) "Technology has changed the way children grow up. Children are bombarded with advertisements, video games, television shows, movies, and a myriad of other images from an early age. Most become fashion conscious as preteens. Many social observers believe children "grow up" at a much earlier age.

At the other end of the spectrum, some adults refuse to grow old. They wear fashions that resemble those worn by college students. They drive sports cars or convertibles. Many middle-aged adults apparently do not want to grow old, acting like younger people and buying products normally purchased by them. This trend challenges marketers to create messages that reflect these behaviors but do not offend or confuse more traditional middle-aged persons."

I find this very judgmental, naive and borderline offensive (after all the book isn't free). The very essence of marketing is understanding consumers'wants and needs -- and developing appropriate messaging to influence/change their attitudes and purchase behavior. There are a lot of consumers who want to look older, younger, taller, more buff. It's called an image and we all aspire to one. I believe it would be very helpful for the authors to get out of Louisiana and look around. There are lots of 60-year-old guys driving rag tops and are quite happy about it.

Another part of the book (p. 63) suggests that an advertiser needs to get their brand name out in front of consumers in as many locations as possible. That's not marketing; that wasting money.

Another example is on P.89. See if you can discern to which group of consumers are these "marketing tips" are directed:
- Be helpful
- Engage them; involve them in the brand
- Focus on practical, not trivial
- Tell a story that resonates
- Provide details
- Be positive

That's apparently how to market to women in 2014. Really? "Be helpful?" "Be positive?" "Engage them?" You could maybe get away with this from Don Draper in 1958. I was embarrassed to see this in our text book.

A few other observations:
- The book is littered with QR codes. Why "littered?" None of them works.
- There are examples of Integrated Campaigns at the end of most chapters. Oooops... very few of them are integrated in the manner the book defines "integrated."

I called our publisher rep to share some of these issues. He didn't want to hear any of the above-cited examples (there are MANY more). But he did tell me that one other professor had alerted them to similar issues and, as a result of that one person, they are quickly rewriting, reediting and republishing the book. A response that is befitting of the book.

There are many other, much better marketing books available.

A required text for class

Let's be real - you're buying this for a class, it's a required text, you don't actually get a say in the quality.

That said, this is a mediocre marketing textbook at best. The content is pretty haphazardly organized, the examples aren't terribly relevant, and enough of the concepts are poorly explained that even our professor admitted it.

If you're okay with reading textbooks electronically I do recommend that, since the ebook version lets you search, bookmark, and highlight content, allowing you to quickly review specific concepts without having to flip through pages and potentially miss something.

If Lyme or tick borne disease affects your life, this is the book to read......

The comments for Compendium of Tick Borne Disease (TBD) already expressed by others are accurate and beyond. Perhaps this volume will do for the issue of tick borne diseases what William Osler's 'The Principles and Practice of Medicine' did for general medicine. However, this volume is readable for both for physicians and non-physicians alike. Dr. Spreen has done magnificent job of informative writing for a wide audience. Terms and concepts are defined so one doesn't need medical training to comprehend the complex issues with TBDs. Her personal writing style makes what could be dull reading, instead fascinating reading. I'm a physician with Lyme and considered myself literate on the subject, until I began to read this text and now realizing how little I know. This is the book badly needed by both physicians and those (or loved ones) suffering with tick borne diseases. Public libraries, medical school and teaching hospital libraries need this copy on their circulating shelves and in their reference section. Consider petitioning your local acquisitions librarian to obtain a copy(s). This volume can be made available to everyone if public libraries will acquire it. Lyme/TBD in general are so controversial and the disease presentations so variable that my impression is that anyone suspecting they have Lyme should self-educate. The information in this book imparts knowledge and wisdom for a very costly disease and I believe in the long run will not only save money, help understand the illness(es) and guide one in decisions about effective treatment. The author is well qualified to write this well researched text and has inside knowledge from everything from personal experience with TBD in self and family, to research, writing and the current medical milieu in which Lyme is embroiled. Kathy's sacrifice to write this book is no small gift to those who suffer from tick borne diseases. Thank you, Dr. Spreen.

Valuable resource for clinicians who are serious about helping patients

Dr. Spreen's book "Compendium of Tick-Borne Disease: A Thousand Pearls" is an excellent example of the valuable insights about a disease that can result when a doctor, or someone close, becomes the patient. Dr. Spreen developed a serious case of Lyme disease and her son almost died from a co-infection with Lyme and Babesia, providing the motivation to undertake this Herculean effort, which took advantage of her background in public health and medical research, and her experience as a practicing physician. The book represents a distillation and interpretation of the clinical literature on tick-borne diseases, primarily Lyme and related disease, as well as the opinions and practices of doctors who are dedicated to treating them. The field is a mess, with profound gaps in knowledge about the causative organisms, disease pathophysiology and treatment regimens, and is further complicated by political and economic aspects. The result has been the development of competing camps that have extremely different views, with the biggest source of contention being the existence and treatment of chronic disease. Dr. Spreen makes a strong case for aggressive treatment of both acute and chronic disease, and is particularly critical of a wait-and-see approach, rigid clinical practice guidelines, lab-dependent diagnosis, the requirement for erythema migrans (the supposedly characteristic bulls-eye rash of Lyme disease), inadequate duration of treatment, over-reliance on monotherapy, the failure to consider tick-borne disease besides Lyme, and the failure to consider concomitant tick-borne disease (which has become very common). She repeatedly emphasizes the need to listen to the patient and to make a clinical diagnosis. The book focuses on the needs of clinicians who are serious about treating tick-borne diseases, and provides extensive guidance for their diagnosis and treatment. The "pearls" in the title are side-notes that are interspersed throughout most of the pages and serve to emphasize, clarify, summarize and give examples. The writing style is very personal, and while not typical for a medical textbook, is very effective in delivering the message and engaging the reader. Sometimes things appear to be repetitive, but this is probably because the book is expected to be used as a go-to reference more than to be read cover-to-cover. I think it is going to be very interesting to see how this book is received, and hope it is not ignored because it has so much potential to help improve the treatment of tick-borne diseases--which are significantly under diagnosed and under treated.

Support Group Leader Gives Two Thumbs Way Up!

Dr. Spreen's book is a Godsend to patients, caregivers, and physicians alike. I heard her describe what the book covered while at another event and I purchased it immediately without reserve. As the Founder of the Howard County Lyme Awareness group, I have read many books about Lyme and tick-borne diseases and tried myself to sift through the endless amounts of research and theory without confident success. Kathy Spreen has sifted through all this for us and presents it in such a palatable way. She is a master at taking those hard to comprehend medical terms and ideas, such as in the "Gentle Immunology" chapter and helping the lay person grasp it.

I have recommended this book to the patients and families that attend my support group and events as well as to several physicians, who were incidentally thrilled to find something so comprehensive and have since purchased the book themselves. I have also recommended that people take this book along to their physician and gently encourage them to consider specific courses of action based on the research shown in the text.

As someone with Chronic Lyme herself, caregiver to 2 children with Lyme & Tick-Borne Diseases, and a leader of a local support group, I cannot recommend this book high enough and that is why I give it two thumbs WAY UP!

Questions are ok, reasoning is lacking

The questions seem very representative of Cisco exams, but the point of this book is supposed to be the reasoning provided for the correct answer. I found the explanations to be very short and lacking real information. Mainly the answer explanations are similar to "answer B is correct because that is the answer." I would have liked to have more information like "answer B is correct because this model of device has feature X instead of feature Y. Answer's C and D have feature X but don't have feature Z."

A Standing Ovation

As I was reading "How To Get Arrested," I thought about how skilled we all are at putting on our own personal variety `show' to get what we want out of life. Dick and Jane, the central characters in this parable, put on a variety of `shows' to achieve their goal of relocating to Hollywood. Once they land in Tinsel Town, they attempt to turn their personal `shows' into a Professional Show Business Career. It doesn't take them very long to discover that there is a right way and a wrong way to launch a professional career. As Dick and Jane pursue their dream of becoming stars, it is fascinating to watch one of them reach out and acquire professional skills that ultimately results in success, as the other isolates and keeps putting on their same old `act' that quickly results in failure. I laughed. I cried. And as I finished the last page, I smiled and thought about the fact that if I had read this book thirty years ago, it would have dramatically reduced the time it took me to make it. This is a show-stopping book, worthy of a standing ovation; a must-read for the aspiring entertainer.

Really great book for actors!

I was so surprised at what a great book this is for actors. It breaks down what to do and how to do it. Most industry book tell actors "Go get an agent" and then B.S. with more empty advise - THEY DO NOT TELL YOU HOW TO GET THE AGENT!!!! This book does! It also tells you how to get the job! This book is more important for actors than any acting class in LA or New York City. THANKS MICHAEL J.WALLACH AND BRAVO!

I've read a lot of acting books how to study this technique, that technique, when you get to Hollywood or New York what you need to know is "How to Get Arrested"... How to make it, survive, get your SAG card, an agent, a manager.
This brilliant book that Michael Wallach has put together is an easy read while focusing on the steps of success to making it in show business. What you need to bring to the table is yourself and "How to get Arrested" once you get to LA or NY. "How to Get Arrested" has the answers for you. If my niece was moving out here to be an actress, I would give her a big hug and hand her a copy of Michael Wallach book!

Here is a book that will give you all the basics of environmental science. Miller updates his book every 2 years, so the information is not only relevant, it's completely current. (Very difficult with such a fast paced topic.)
The book provides all the basic ground work for continuing to study or just be involved with what's going on in the environment.
There are chapters on basic science terms, population, energy, biodiversity, pollution, hazardous waste, economics and politics.
For example, if you want to know what the US Fish and Wildlife group has done historical, currently and what different groups would like them to do now and why, it's all in this book.
Absolutely fascinating reading for anyone who want's to know what all the noise is about our environment.

Sustaining the Earth

Environmental preservation is such an important subject that it should be presented in a manner that anyone can understand. This book burries the reader, with it's run-on sentances, with mind boggling fact after mind boggling fact. The grammar was so bad that it ultimately stunted my motivation for reading the text not more than half way through. I reccomend looking elsewhere in order to educate yourself on bio-eccological concerns.
