Puluwat Atoll in Micronesia, with a population of only a few hundred proud seafaring people, can fulfill anyone's romantic daydream of the South Seas. Thomas Gladwin has written a beautiful and perceptive book which describes the complex navigational systems of the Puluwat natives, yet has done so principally to provide new insights into the effects of poverty in Western cultures.
The cognitive system which enables the Puluwatans to sail their canoes without instruments over trackless expanses of the Pacific Ocean is sophisticated and complex, yet the Puluwat native would score low on a standardized intelligence test. The author relates this discrepancy between performance and measured abilities to the educational problems of disadvantaged children. He presents his arguments simply and clearly, with sensitive and detailed descriptions and many excellent illustrations. His book will appeal to anthropologists, psychologists, and sailing enthusiasts alike.

A classic...
By David Burch
This is a classic text on the subject it covers. It deals more with the important cultural matters and background than with specific details of actual techniques, but it provides the foundation and insights into the mentality that is the backbone to primitive navigation. All who have written on the subject, including myself, have acknowledged the great value of this early work. The big bird, by the way is Aquila, the eagle, with east represented by the bright star Altair, but since the declination of Altair is N 9 deg and not 0, we have to assume that "east" in the minds of these early navigators was some 9 deg north of what we would now call east... but they did not use compasses nor charts as we do now, so none of that matters. East is where the sun comes up on certain times of the year.

very good read, excellent info
By inquirer
excellent book if you are into the traditions of the south pacific and ancient (non instrument) navigation. in fact, you will see my reviews of a number of other similar books. but the best overall book for an overview is vaka moana. after vaka moana you will likely order the others i'm reviewing which are targeted at the reader who wants more detailed information or specific histories.

Required Reading for Those Interested in The Secrets of the Ancient Pacific Navigators
By Douglas N. Arvidson
This book was another piece of the puzzle when I set about to add to my understanding of traditional navigation in the Pacific while writing my novel BROTHERS OF THE FIRE STAR. Gladwin, an engineer turned anthropologist, looks at the skills of navigation a bit differently than other authors who have investigated the subject. Though he is not an experienced hands-on sailor and did not spend much time sailing with and living with his subjects, his insights into how Pacific islander think about their world was instructive. I recommend reading this book along with THE LAST NAVIGATOR and WE, THE NAVIGATORS to get a well-rounded picture.
