Great textbook in Neuropsychological Assessment.

I conduct neuropsychological assessment with adults and wanted an updated version of the Lezak classic text. This book is very comprehensive and packed with information relevant to the topic. It weighs 8 pounds, so is a bit hefty to put on your lap and read, but it is worth it . It is interesting to read and I have been reading some of it every night, often picking up some more subtle aspects of assessment that I am grateful to be aware of. For individual tests, especially the better researched and most often used tests, it gives a lot of detailed information , as well as sources for updated normative data, which is very helpful. I know that
neuropsychologists often consider this the "bible" of this type of assessment.

Disappointing! Problems with highlighting in iPad Kindle app and the X-Ray Feature is missing altogether

This is a review of the Kindle / ebook version. This textbook has been one of the standards in the field for years. I already own it as a hardcover, but it is huge...a book for a sturdy table, not a lap. On my Kindle devices I've enjoyed the note taking features and the X-Ray reference features so much with my other Kindle books that I snapped this Lezak text up as an ebook thinking that I'd be able to do the usual and choose a term in the book and see all the other instances of where it is mentioned throughout the book and a definition of the term. I really enjoy using X-Ray for finding a list of all the most important terms and concepts on and around a page and working definitions of each, especially in an 8 lb tome like this. Unfortunately though that the X-Ray function is completely missing in this Kindle edition. Another disappointment is that on my iPad the highlighting is so opaque that the text looks like its been painted over. You can make out the words, but they certainly don't stand out like they normally do. I'm eager to dive more deeply into this text and wouldn't have dropped another $90 plus on it unless I thought it was a superb reference and well worth spending the additional money on. But it was just a bit of a let down to find No X-Ray feature, especially in a reference textbook, and highlighting problems on my Kindle device of choice. I'd love to bump this score up, and I certainly will as soon as either, and hopefully both, of those issues are rectified.

Note: As I've continued reading the highlighting has revealed itself to be worse than I thought. The first time I highlight a phrase it looks so opaque, it is almost unreadable. If I click on the highlighted phrase and cancel it, and then highlight the exact same text again, that bit becomes less opaque...which is still not translucent like it is in my other Kindle books, but because I want it to be somewhat readable, I am literally having to do this highlight, cancel the highlight, and then highlight again to virtually every bit of text I'm looking to make stand out. Kinda sucking the magic out of the Kindle experience.

This is the bible of neuropsychological assessment

Muriel Lezak Ph.D. is considered to be the Grandmother of Neuropsychology. She is one of the most influential figures in the field. Her book is the cornerstone of the field and has been ever since the first edition. Most clinical neuropsychologists use this book as THE definitive reference guide in the field. The 4th edition was excellent and this 5th edition is even better because it contains quite a bit of new information since the field has been changing and maturing so quickly over the last decade.

Outstanding book for any service industry

Danny Kavadlo has provided us with the best nuts and bolts book of how to develop clientele in any service industry that I have ever seen. Danny is a Personal Trainer, and aims this book at anyone wanting to become a personal trainer. First Danny gives us a brief overview of his life, varied and busy, but intensely oriented, hard working, punctual. Then we get a look at big box gyms, boutique gyms, and then self employed personal trainers and how to make it in any of these. After this Danny gives the ten top does and don'ts for anyone in any service industry. These are basic and well known, but all too often ignored, forgotten and just plain not followed. Danny presents them very well, in an entertaining highly readable fashion.

Basically Danny is saying that the personal trainer is there for the client, not himself, not the gym, not the gym manager. Focus on the client, giving him/her a combination of what he/she needs and what he/she wants.

FAQ's from prospective clients are reviewed with excellent responses given. How to close the deal for the contract is covered in detail. Pitfalls and traps in negotiating, workout interaction, and followup are covered in detail. There are even 3 suggestions for first workouts each at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels.

Danny is dead serious throughout, and what he says is essential for getting to a full schedule. But Danny includes simple humor and human naturalness throughout. It is easy to see why Danny is a successful Personal Trainer. He has the right personality, and the right technics. Here Danny shares both the technics and aspects of the personality.

Truly an outstanding book.

Awesome book for personal trainers

I don't write as many reviews as I should, considering how many books I read (especially about fitness & health) but had to speak up about this one. For those brand new to personal training like me, this book is pure gold. Tells you how to go about the sales/business side of personal training and be successful. Written in a very entertaining yet informative style too. This is simply a must read for every trainer. Now when I work out at the gym and see other trainers, they're making most of the mistakes the author points out, and I can't help but laugh (and feel bad for their clients). Now I will know what to do (and what not do to) when I start training people.

Great for military Leaders in charge of PT

I bought because I was buying every book Danny Kavadlo wrote. I soon found out that it's not an exercise book but it's a book on how to be a personal trainer. This might get people down but if you're in charge of anyone's fitness training (coach, personal trainer, physical therapist, a Leader in the military) this book is still great! Pick it up and make working out fun for those people again! You'll have a blast too.

Samuel C. Weaver, Ph.D., is associate professor of finance at Lehigh University, where he formerly served as the Theodore A. Lauer Adjunct Professor of Finance. He is a veteran of over 100 acquisition valuations and numerous other restructuring activities.

More applicable learning than a whole year at University...

If you're already in the workforce and thinking of updating skills and knowledge by doing a few subjects at a College, try this little book first. It may be all you need, and more, at a fraction of the investment in time and money.

If you're a business student, this would be a great supplementary reader. Among other things, it's likely to keep your brain on the straight and practical.

Mandatory text that was misrepresented to our class

This book was required text for a class in Human Resources. We were told a background in finance management was not necessary for the text or the class. If you know little-to-nothing about the world of finance then you will be completely lost trying to understand this text. There is very little of term definitions and a whole lot of highly analytical theories and practices that require extensive background know-how. The title should really be "Finance and Accounting for People Already in Finance and Accounting."

Nonfinancial Managers BEWARE

I had the same experience as another reviewer. This was the required text for a Financial Aspects course in my Human Resources studies. This text is not helpful at all if you do not have a background in finances. Speaking from personal experience, calculus courses aren't even a sufficient pre-requisite. While I appreciate the smaller textbook in theory, it does not lend itself to the material covered in this book. Most of the tables are not on the same page or remotely near the material where they are referenced. I had also hoped with a text for "nonfinancial managers" that there would be a glossary of terms. No such luck. This text is very detailed and thorough but should not be a reference for "nonfinancial managers", as the title suggests. This is more of a pocket guide for those in the financial industry, as a refresher.

Brings back vivid memories of the character and characters of typical Mogadishu neighborhoods without loosing sight of the class and clan layers of that era. The author has done a magnificent job in preserving an important part of Somali history for the next generation. A must read for anyone intetrsted in understanding Skmalia an Somalis.

About the Author
Steven H. Weintraub is a Professor of Mathematics at Lehigh University. He has visited UCLA, Rutgers, Oxford, Yale, Gottingen, Bayreuth, and Hannover. Professor Weintraub is a member of the American Mathematical Society and currently serves as an Associate Secretary of the AMS. He has written more than 50 research papers on a wide variety of mathematical subjects, and ten other books.

Enjoyable and edifying, but often superficial

Winning With People takes the reader on a 360-degree tour of our interactions with other people. The book is built around five questions designed to stimulate self-reflection. This helps us see ourselves as others see us and to see them as valuable even when we do not agree or understand them. I suspect almost anyone can find something, perhaps many things, in this book to help them grow in interpersonal skills. Maxwell insists that we be authentic and even sacrificial in our relationships to get along with others. He is absolutely right to instruct us that meeting someone half-way simply is not good enough. If we value the other person (and why shouldn't we?) half-way is just a half hearted approach and the other person will eventually perceive our lack of care towards them.

Maxwell helped me see most of our relational problems are in ourselves. I must take ownership of my shortcomings and strive to correct them. Along with my own housecleaning I must learn to build healthy relationships with others accepting that they too have housecleaning needs they may or may not ever address. Failure in either area on my part (housecleaning or skills building) can quickly destroy relationships I am currently blessed with. The first priority is learning how not to destroy relationships (get the beam out of my own eye), then learn to build good ones.

Maxwell's straightforward style reaches out to everyone using interpersonal examples from sports, pastoring, business, gangsters, marriage, Abraham Lincoln and other great leaders. Also, if you like to collect great quotes as I do, you will find dozens of good ones here (several from honest Abe).

I enjoyed reading the book but I have a few bones to pick that might bother some readers more or less so than they did me. At times I find Maxwell's approach superficial, too much cheerleading and not enough deep reflection. For example, some of the techniques for building up self esteem in others when you know practically nothing about them (p 92-95) strike me as insincere manipulation - calling it sincere doesn't make it so. I also detect some deep underpinnings of consumerism (more is always better) in how Maxwell gauges success. He often refers to who has the largest church attendance or how much the sales grew or other materialistic metrics to indicate success. For example a church with 15,000 members is referred to as being in the top 1% of churches in the country (p212) but no other success criteria are mentioned. In the top 1% by whose standards? Not mine, I don't think the Bible encourages that definition of success. I trust Maxwell is using this as just one convenient guidepost for success, but frankly his writing makes me wonder. I think it is a rather poor way to introduce the success of a church or pastor. These kind of quantitative - grow-baby-grow type examples are common throughout the book. Personally, I think hyper materialism/capitalism is fueling many of our relationship problems. I'm not comfortable having it sprinkled throughout a book on improving relationships.

Finally, there are a few areas where trying to actually adopt what is recommended would drain you in every area of life. P224 recommends: "care more than other think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, expect more than others think is possible, work more than others think is necessary". Maxwell's point is to live up to our highest ideals, but if I take this advice literally I am likely to damage relationships, not improve them because I'll be utterly exhausted in every area of my life - especially spiritually. If I am not to take it literally then it is just cheerleading to inspire me while I read the book. Perhaps I missed the point, but I don't find this helpful past the initial moment of inspiration.

As you can see I have mixed feelings about the book, but I do recommend it for those who want to be led into some useful self-reflection/emotional inventory for improving relationships.

Choosing your path

There are so many things that seem so simple when read in letter form but feel so difficult when practiced in physical form. A lifetime of effort is in front of everyone who chooses to employ these principles and an eternity of reward awaits you if you do. I didn't like reflecting on my weaknesses but I loved seeing ways to overcome them.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. As someone who is not incredibly outgoing or easily sociable, I found this as incredibly helpful in enabling me to open up. Also, as a business professional, I found the concepts and principles easy to apply in a professional setting (i.e. a boss that is difficult to work with).
